INT. MOBILE HOME
Charlie's phone is ringing.  He picks it up.

CHARLIE
Hang on, hang on. Come on.

BILL
Where are you, Charlie?
More importantly, where is my money?
You're into me for 30 grand.

CHARLIE
Jack, I'm going to pay you.

BILL
This ain't Jack! Lt's Bill Panner.
You owe Jack money, too?
You pay me first!

CHARLIE
Bill. We're good, buddy. I got your
money. It's right here in my hand.
Why don't we meet up on the?

Charlie pretends that his cell phone has problems.  He speaks incoherently.

BILL
Your phone's going all screwy. Hello?
I'm losing you. I can't hear what you're say...

Charlie hangs up.

Three girls are watching Charlie from outside.  They see a robot.

GIRL
Hey, mister. Is that Ambush?

CHARLIE
Yeah.

LITTLE GIRL
Can we see him?

CHARLIE
You want to see him?

LITTLE GIRL
Yeah.

CHARLIE
Give me a minute.

Charlie turns on the robot and operates it with a remote control.  He and the
robot start to walk out of the mobile home.

CHARLIE
This...is Ambush. Wakey, wakey.

OLDER GIRL
What robot is he fighting?

One girl has a camera.

CHARLIE
Actually he's going to fight...Whoa, little lady. What are you doing?

OLDER GIRL
Can we get a picture with him?

CHARLIE
Sure. For five dollars.

OLDER GIRL
You want five dollars? Seriously?

CHARLIE
No, I want five dollars immediately.

The girls walk away.

OLDER GIRL
Come on, guys.

CHARLIE
All right, I'm kidding. Three bucks.

OLDER GIRL
Whatever.

CHARLIE
How about RICKY2.50?

OLDER GIRL
You suck!

CHARLIE
It's going to be one
of those towns, huh?

EXT. COUNTY FAIR
Charlie is at a fair, talking to a man about a fight.

ANNOUNCER
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the 2020 San Leandro County Fair.
Please take your seats. We're almost ready to get this thing started.

CHARLIE
I was told my bot was fighting an 800-pound steer.
That is not 800 pounds, knucklehead.

Ricky approaches, sneering at Charlie.

RICKY
Charlie "the Can Do Kid" Kenton. Time
has not been good to you, my friend.

CHARLIE
Ricky, we got a big problem here.

RICKY
Slow down there, hoss. Last time I saw you, you were staring
at the ceiling at the Sam Houston Center with the taste of my
right cross all over your face.

MAN
Are we good to go here?

RICKY
Yeah.

CHARLIE
We agreed that my boxer would fight an 800-pound steer for three grand.
Am I right?

RICKY
Yes, sir. We did.

CHARLIE
That bull is like 2,000 pounds.

Ricky waves some money in Charlie's face.

RICKY
I'll tell you something. Your bot don't fight,
you don't get paid! How about that?

Charlie speaks to the other man.

CHARLIE
Get the hell out of here.

The other man leaves.

CHARLIE(TO RICKY)
Why don't we make this more interesting.
My bot against your bull, straight up.

RICKY
How much?

CHARLIE
Twenty grand, winner takes all.

RICKY
Twenty grand. You got 20 grand?

CHARLIE
In a safe in my truck.

RICKY
All right, Charlie. Twenty grand it is, but if you lose and you welch,
I'll come after you and beat you to within an inch of your life.
You know that I can do that because I already done done it!

CHARLIE
In life you get too close, in the ring
you stand back like a girl. Just shake.

RICKY
All right. Shake and pow! Just like that
once again. You want to dance again?

Ricky calls out to the audience.

RICKY
Cheer for this guy. Give him some luck. He needs some luck, y'all.

CHARLIE
Don't touch that bull.

RICKY
Ladies and gentlemen, I got to ask, do we have any fans
of robot boxing here today? Now, listen, friends, I understand
we can't all afford to go all the way over there to Dallas
and pay 300 for one of those World Robot Boxing League fights.
So, I decided that I would bring a robot boxing match
right here to our little fair here in San Leandro.
How about that? Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you,
Ambush!

CHARLIE
Let's do it!
All right, big fella.

Ambush walks into the ring.

RICKY
He's a big fella, ain't he?

CHARLIE
Take a turn.
Let them see how beautiful you are.
Show them some power.

Ambush makes some moves.

RICKY
Look at that.
He's getting all kung fu-y on us.

CHARLIE
Yeah, big fella.

RICKY
Ambush's opponent today,
he's last year's runner-up
in the baddest of the bulls competition,
ladies and gentlemen,
Black Thunder!
Let's get it on!

A bull comes into the ring.

CHARLIE
Let's get this thing started.
Is that all you got?
Yeah, brother. Bring it on.
Take him, take him.

Ambush throws the bull to the ground.

RICKY
Ambush lays the smackdown
on that prime beef.

CHARLIE
I got more for you, big fella.
We're just getting started.
OK. Jump, now!

Ambush jumps over the bull, then punches it.

RICKY
Ambush, decks Black Thunder,
but when you mess with the bull,
you're going to get the horns.

Charlie is distracted by a woman. He doesn't see the bull charging.

CHARLIE
You like that. I can tell.
You like that.
Turn around!

The bull takes off Ambush's leg.

CHARLIE
Ricky! Ricky, stop this thing!
Come on. We're still in this thing.
Just hop. Hop.
That's it. Come on.
Ricky, enough! Enough!

RICKY
I can't hear you over the sound
of your robot being destroyed.

AUDIENCE
Kill! Kill! Kill!

CHARLIE
Come on, get up.
Get up! Come on!
No!
Come on, no. No, no, no!

The bull finishes Ambush.

RICKY
Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it
for our warriors out here today
at the 2020 San Leandro County Fair.
Thank you for coming out,
and we'll see you next time,
because there will be one.

Some girls are carrying Ambush's leg away.

CHARLIE
Give me that leg.

GIRL1
Sure. For five dollars.

GIRL2
Boo-yah!

RICKY
All right! That was ridonculous fun,
now wasn't it, ladies and gentlemen?
I'm going to come by for my money,
Charlie boy. You best have it.
Everybody say "hey!"

AUDIENCE
Hey!

RICKY
Everybody say "ho!"

AUDIENCE
Ho!

RICKY
How about that?
How you doing there, little robot?

EXT.PARKING LOT
Charlie is looking for his keys.
Two men approach him,and he punches one.

CHARLIE
My keys, damn it.
One more step
and I'll drop you like your girlfriend.

MAN1
Charlie, relax.

CHARLIE
I'm not paying you. That was a bogus
fight. It cost me my last robot.

MAN2
Just listen to us.

MAN1
Do you recall Caroline Fallon?

CHARLIE
She's my ex-girlfriend. I haven't seen
her in ten years. What does she want?

MAN2
Nothing. She died.

MAN1
Do you recall Max Kenton?

CHARLIE
He's my son. He's got to be nine.

MAN2
Eleven.

CHARLIE
Eleven. OK.
Is he dead, too?

MAN1
No, he's fine. That's why we're here.

INT.COURTHOUSE
A judge is speaking at a custodial hearing for Max Kenton.

JUDGE
This court is convened
to address the custodial status
of one Max Kenton, age 11.
Mother, Caroline Fallon, deceased.
Father, Charles Kenton.
Debra Fallon Barnes,
you're the boy's aunt.

DEBRA
Yes. As I've already told you,
my husband, Marvin, is wealthy,
and we can more than provide for Max.

JUDGE
I appreciate that, but per Texas
state law, without a written will
next of kin retains custody.
Charles Kenton,
who is aware of this custody hearing,
and we are expecting him...

INT.CAR
Charlie is talking on the phone.

CHARLIE
I need a new robot now.
I had a big fight
for Ambush next Saturday.
I got to show up with something.
Noisy Boy is for sale?
In his day, Noisy Boy was a killer.
How much? That's a good deal.
What's wrong with him?
I can live with that.
I don't have it.

INT.COURTHOUSE
Debra makes her case for the judge.

DEBRA
Charles Kenton waived all of his rights
to custody right after the boy was born.
I can more than provide for Max.

Charlie walks in,then starts to leave.

JUDGE
Please be Charles Kenton.

CHARLIE
Charlie, yeah.
I'm here to sign some paper
that releases my rights
to the custody of my son.
That's why I'm here.
Do I need to be here?

DEBRA
Charlie.
Do you even remember me?
Debra, Caroline's sister.

CHARLIE
Yeah, Debra. How are you?

JUDGE
Mr. Kenton. Please take a seat.

DEBRA
Your Honor, may I please go
and see my nephew now?

JUDGE
Yes, you may.
How about you, Mr. Kenton?

CHARLIE
What?

JUDGE
You can spend some time with him, if you'd like.

CHARLIE
With the kid?

DEBRA(TO CHARLIE)
Yeah, the kid.  Max. Your son?

CHARLIE
All right.

DEBRA
You've been working with those robots
for so long, you've become one.

Debra talks to Marvin.

DEBRA
Honey, you wait right here. I'm going to be back.

MARVIN
You take all the time you need, sweetheart.

Charlie notices Debra's jewelry, and realizes they are rich.

CHARLIE
Your Honor, I'd like to, at this juncture, step out and call my attorney,
if that's all right.

Marvin looks at Charlie, concerned.

JUDGE
Please.

INT. HALL
Charlie is waiting for Marvin to come out.
He sees Marvin.

CHARLIE
Come on. Come on. There you are.

He pretends to talk to his attorney on the phone.

CHARLIE
He'll be in a foster home. No, they find good families.
Young. Energetic. Yeah. Thanks, Michael. I will. OK.

Marvin approaches Charlie and talks to him.

MARVIN
Marvin Barnes. I'm Debra's husband.

CHARLIE
Right, yeah.

MARVIN
Debra really wants to adopt Max. I'm up for it. But...

CHARLIE
Seventy-five grand.

MARVIN
$75,000? You're serious? The thing is...we're supposed to go to Italy
this summer with my oldest friend and his wife. Two months in Tuscany
and all over.

CHARLIE
Just the four of you. Sounds nice.

MARVIN
We'll be back in New York by the end of August.

CHARLIE
In August. A hundred.

MARVIN
$100,000?

CHARLIE
You heard me.

MARVIN
You're crazy.

CHARLIE
Not nearly as crazy as your wife if you tell her I just signed over that kid to the state of Texas.
There's a real way everyone gets what they want here. So here's what you're going to do.
You're going to tell your wife I'll only sign over custody to her if I get to spend the summer with the kid first. Just tell her how guilty she made me feel for being such a terrible absentee dad, how I want to make good with junior, a little fatherly bonding, whatnot. She'll buy it, you get to be the hero and everybody wins.

MARVIN
OK. But not a word about the money to Debra, you understand?

CHARLIE
I understand.

MARVIN
I'll give you 50 grand tonight when we drop off Max and the other 50 when we get back in August and you deliver him to us in New York.

CHARLIE
Pleasure doing business with you.

They shake hands.

INT. COURTROOM

Charlie signs some papers.

CHARLIE
Your Honor, I'm happy we all took the time to make the best decision for everyone.

MARVIN
Happy?

DEBRA
Yeah, I am.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE COURT
Charlie is talking on the phone.

CHARLIE
I'm buying Noisy Boy. I got the money.
Take him to Tallet's Gym and I'll meet you there.

INT. BAILEY'S GYM
Charlie talks to Bailey. They have a quarrel.

CHARLIE
Hello? Bailey?

BAILEY
Some guy is here with the robot you're buying, and it smells like disaster to me.

CHARLIE
Nice to see you, too. Might I also say how cute you look.

BAILEY
Give it up.

CHARLIE
God, I need a shower. You want to take a shower? Come on.

BAILEY
Let me make something clear. A creepy dude with a robot in a box has been sitting outside
my gym for two hours. Putting aside the fact that you're doing what I'm guessing is a black
market deal on my doorstep, how will you pay him when Ambush just got destroyed?

CHARLIE
The money is on its way. Just distract him.

BAILEY
I have been. It's exhausting.

CHARLIE
You're the best.

BAILEY
Yeah? Really? Is that why you're buying a $45,000 robot when you owe me six grand in rent?
Because I'm the best?

CHARLIE
Three.

BAILEY
Six. There is a guy with real money who wants to buy this place.

CHARLIE
Come on. Like you're really going to sell your dad's gym.

BAILEY
If you don't make rent, I can't make payments and I won't have a choice.

CHARLIE
Your father would climb out of his grave and kick your ass if you sold this place.

BAILEY
My father would climb out of his grave and kick your ass.

CHARLIE
Bailey?

Charlie looks into Bailey`s eyes.

BAILEY
Don't.

CHARLIE
Don't what?

BAILEY
Don't do that thing.

CHARLIE
No, you like that thing.

BAILEY
No.

CHARLIE
Yeah.

BAILEY
No, I don't like that thing. I used to. Once. Briefly.
Now I like money more.

CHARLIE
I don't believe you.

BAILEY
I don't care.

Marvin clears his throat.

CHARLIE
Marvin.

CHARLIE(TO BAIILEY)
Your money has arrived.

Charlie walks to Marvin.

CHARLIE
Marv.

EXT. OUTSIDE BAILEY'S GYM
Marvin passes Charlie the money.

MARVIN
Fifty grand, as promised. Here are all our numbers and contact info over in Europe.

Debra talks to Charlie.

DEBRA
So that's everything there.

DEBRA (TO CHARLIE)
So Marvin tells me you want this time with Max.

CHARLIE
Yeah.

DEBRA
You did the right thing, giving me custody. Caroline would have wanted that.
Now, have him back in New York on August 27th.

CHARLIE
That's a deal.

MARVIN
OK, let's go get Max. It's OK. You want to go around the other side here and I'll get Max?

Max gets out of the car.

MARVIN
Hey. Max. See you, pal.

DEBRA
Max, we'll see you at the end of the summer, honey.

Marvin and Debra leave in their car.  Max walks to Charlie. Charlie talks to Max.

CHARLIE
I'm Charlie. It's been a long time. You know, I'm your...

MAX
You screwed me.

CHARLIE
Nice mouth.

MAX
Do you know where they're going?

CHARLIE
Italy?

MAX
Yeah, Italy. So how did I get stuck here with you?

CHARLIE
Relax, kid. You got a whole life
of fine living ahead of you.

Bailey comes out to the street.

BAILEY
Charlie! Dude's pissed. He's going to take off.

Charlie gives Bailey some money.

MAX
Did Marvin give you that money?

CHARLIE
Here, just close the deal.
I'll be right there, OK?

BAILEY
I'm Bailey.

MAX
Max. Max Kenton.

BAILEY
So this is your...

CHARLIE
Yeah, it's him. Don't worry about it, OK?

BAILEY
I'm looking at you two and...

CHARLIE
Just go and put noisy in the shop, please? Thank you.
You're going to stay here with her while I'm on the road.

MAX
How much did he give you?

CHARLIE
You're coming at this the wrong way.

MAX
No, tell me. I want to know.

CHARLIE
Fifty thousand, OK? He gave me 50,000
to sign you over to her. Will you shut up now?

MAX
You sold me?

CHARLIE
Sounds worse than it is.

MAX
Really.

CHARLIE
It's to take care of you.

MAX
Give me half the money and you won't have to.

CHARLIE
Where are you going to go?

MAX
Give me the money. I'll be fine.

CHARLIE
I told your aunt I'll get you
to New York at the end of the summer.

MAX
Now you're concerned for Aunt Debra?
You sold me for 50 grand.
You owe me half!

CHARLIE
I don't have it! I spent the money on a robot.
It's gone! OK? Gone! I'm through here.

INT.GYM

CHARLIE
What did we get?

BAILEY
Noisy Boy has arrived.

Charlie looks at a box.

CHARLIE
That's a lot of airline stickers and customs tags.

BAILEY
He's been all over the world.

CHARLIE
London, Japan, Brazil, Sao Paulo...

BAILEY
Hasn't seen North American soil in over two years.
Maybe that's why you got such a good price, genius.

Max walks in.

CHARLIE(TO MAX)
Decided to stay? This is Bailey. She'll be looking
after you for a few weeks.

Bailey is surprised.

CHARLIE (TO BAILEY)
I need you to look after the kid for a few weeks.

MAX
I want half that money.

CHARLIE
Are we back to this again?

MAX
Is there a real robot boxer in there?

BAILEY
Noisy Boy's in there. You ever heard of him?

MAX
Of course. He fought Rubicon for the WRB belt in 2016.

Bailey smiles.  Max opens the box.  A robot is inside.

CHARLIE
Holy crap, he looks amazing.

BAILEY
His composite armor has been replaced.
Let's see if the insides look as good.

MAX
I've watched that fight with Rubicon like 20 times.
He should have had him in the third round,
but Rubicon got lucky with a huge right and ended it.

Charlie operates Noisy Boy. Max hurries to get out of the way.

CHARLIE
Relax, kid, he's on our side.

BAILEY
Not funny.

CHARLIE
Kind of funny.

BAILEY
You know he has voice recognition, right?

MAX
No, he doesn't.

BAILEY
He didn't in the League.

CHARLIE
When Noisy fought in Brazil, they must have put it in.
Brazilians are crazy about that talk-to-your-robot crap.

Charlie speaks into the controller.

CHARLIE
Right, left, uppercut!

Noisy Boy doesn`t move.

CHARLIE
Doesn't work. Right, left, uppercut!
I knew that price was too good
to be true. We got screwed.

BAILEY
Let me see if I can fix it.

CHARLIE
Look how good he looks, too.

BAILEY
Give me two seconds. Let me look at something!

CHARLIE
Why didn't you ask to look at it?

BAILEY
Relax!

Max gives Noisy Boy some commands in Japanese, and Noisy Boy responds.

CHARLIE
Was that Japanese?

MAX
Let me see if I can reset him to English.

CHARLIE
How do you know Japanese?

MAX
Video games.

CHARLIE
Do you play video games in Japanese?

MAX
Japanese bootlegs are always better.

CHARLIE
Give me that.

BAILEY
He's reset to English, and I found his command matrix.
They have pre-Ioaded a bunch of combinations.
They should be listed here.

CHARLIE
Top salvo!

BAILEY
What did I tell you?

CHARLIE
Gravity One Downtown! I was due for some good luck!

BAILEY
You're welcome.

CHARLIE
Thank you. Bailey, help me put him in the truck.
I am going to go and get your money.

EXT. STREET
Max is holding Charlie`s keys over the sewer.

CHARLIE
Give me the keys.

MAX
I'm coming with you.

CHARLIE
No, you're not.

MAX
Why not?

CHARLIE
Because I don't want you with me, OK?

MAX
I'm either coming with you, or you're
fishing for your keys in the sewer.
Your choice. What's it going to be, old man?
Oh, my God. That was close, wasn't it?

Max pretends to drop the keys in the sewer.

CHARLIE
Don't do that again.

MAX
That's scaring you, isn't it? Don't do this again?

CHARLIE
Get in. Just get in. Give me the keys first.

Max gets in the truck.

MAX
Wait till I get in the truck. Thanks, Big Pops.
Sweet ride.

CHARLIE
Put on your seatbelt and don't talk.

INT.ARENA
Charlie,Max,and Noisy Boy walk into an arena

FINN
I'm taking all bets!

CHARLIE
Keep up. Stay close.

FINN
Charlie Kenton is in the house!

CHARLIE
All right, all right.

FINN
Come on, man! Is that Noisy Boy?

CHARLIE
The one and only.

FINN
That's Noisy Boy! Noisy's been in Japan. Softer bots over there.
Sure, do you want to fight him tonight?

CHARLIE
What did you get? He can take any bot in this place. You know it.

FINN
You can have any undercard you want. Five thousand guaranteed.

FINN
A thousand every round your bot survives. Fight till the death!

CHARLIE
No. Give me the main event. Come on. This is Noisy Boy.
An original Tak Mashido bot. He was a World Robot League boxer. Come on!

FINN
You want to fight Midas? Fifty thousand guaranteed, winner takes all.

CHARLIE
Fifty? Really, 50? Now you’re talking.

MAX
Listen, listen. No, look. Listen!

CHARLIE
Give me a sec.

MAX
We should take an undercard fight, make a little cash and get out of here!

CHARLIE
First, there is no "we."
Second, he’s going to crush Midas, and I’m going to make real cash!
We’ll take Midas!

INT. STADIUM

FINN
Tonight, our main event
features the gold-blooded killer!
This pimped-out punk
is programmed for pain!
I give to you the mighty Midas!
Against a bot
who ran with the big boys in the WRB!
He's been on an exile tour overseas, but now he's back home,
and he's ready to make some noise!
Take your first look in a long time
at Noisy Boy!
Crash Palace,
who's ready for some destruction?!

CHARLIE
Let's make some money! Come on!

FINN
We have Midas against Noisy Boy.
Noisy Boy against Midas.
You've been waiting all night for this matchup, Crash Palace!

CHARLIE
Scimitar right!
Did you see that?
Easy money, easy money all night.
All night long!

MIDAS' OPERATOR
Come on! It's not over yet. Let's go!

CHARLIE
Skull salvo! Firefight!

MAX
Yeah! Go, Noisy!
Undercard, huh?

CHARLIE
Shockfist!
Get in there. Shogun Trinity!
Let's finish him. Gravity Slam, Uptown!
This son-of-a-bitch is crazy!
Full Metal Feud! Bring it!
Southpaw! Pain Revolution!

MIDAS' OPERATOR
I got something for you.
Don't you run from me!
You can't run from me!

CHARLIE
Get up!

MAX
That's illegal!

CHARLIE
This is the underworld. There are no rules!

FINN
Now we're seeing the Midas touch.

CHARLIE
No. Hands up!

FINN
Get back in that corner, bitch, and take this whooping like a man!

MAX
He's getting killed in there!
It's a headset! You talk into it and you tell him what to do!

CHARLIE
Panic Shield! That's it. One-Two Overlord!
No, no. Shatter Punch! Five Recall!

MIDAS' OPERATOR
Get some!

CHARLIE
Jab, jab! Right roundhouse!

FINN
Did he just spit his juice in Midas's face?
No, you did not spit in Midas's face!
It's party time now, Crash Palace!

Midas takes off Noisy Boy's arm.

CHARLIE
Use your left!

FINN
Noisy's trying to do something with his one arm!
But Midas pins him, and Daddy goes to work!

CHARLIE
No, no! Get up! Get some!

CHARLIE
Move! Get out of the corner!

VISITOR
Midas! Midas! Midas!

FINN
Somebody's ready to serve up a decappuccino!
I got something for you! You ready?

Midas takes off Noisy Boy's head.

FINN
Good night! That's a home run for Midas.
And so long to Noisy Boy.

INT.UNDER GROUND
Charlie has a hamburger. Max sits down.

CHARLIE
That sucked. You hungry?
I saved what's left
of Noisy's voice recognition board.
Other than that, he's trash.
I got to get a new robot together.
I need to find a mainframe. What?

MAX
I hate hamburgers.

CHARLIE
What kid hates burgers?
Fine. More for me. Here, drink this.

MAX
You never should have taken that fight.

CHARLIE
Really? Really? Thanks, genius.

MAX
Do you even think about the stuff you do before you do it?
You had no idea how to fight that fight.
Those combination codes, you didn't know what half of them even meant.
You threw them in there cocky and half-assed.
You never gave him a chance.

CHARLIE
He wasn't that good.

MAX
Noisy Boy was a great robot.

CHARLIE
Was. Was a great robot back in the League, back in the day. But look around you.
This place is where once great robots go to die.

MAX
So throw him away. That's what you do, right?
Anything you don't need  you throw away.

CHARLIE
Wow. It's been a long night.
If you want to sleep indoors tonight, shut up and get in the truck.
Don't look at me like that way. Get in the truck!

They see Noisy Boy's head on the gate.

CHARLIE
They gave me 400 for his head.
