Dark Knight Part 5

INT. LIBERTY
Two ferries are crossing. One of them, Liberty, carries
ordinary passengers, and the other, Spirit, carries prisoners.

PASSENGER 1
Hey, man! We should
be on that boat!

PASSENGER 2
You want to ride a bus with them? Be my guest.

INT. SPIRIT

SAILOR
Sir, they've stopped their engines.

CAPTAIN
Right. Get on the radio.
Tell them we'll come back and pick
them up once we dump the scum bags.

SAILOR
Liberty, this is Spirit. Come in.

The engines stop.

SAILOR
What the heck was that?
Liberty, come in please. This is Spirit.

INT. LIBERTY
We have the same problem. We lost both engines.

INT. BATMAN'S BASE

BATMAN
Fox. There's something going on
on the ferries.

INT. FERRY
CAPTAIN
Get down to the engine room now

MAN
Captain, we got a hundred barrels
down there rigged to blow. And this.

They open a box. There is a detonator inside.

CAPTAIN
Oh my God! Looks like some kind of detonator.

MAN
Why would they give us the detonator
to our own bomb?

The Joker makes an announcement on the ship's speakers.

JOKER
Tonight you are all going to be part of a social experiment. For the magic of diesel fuel
and ammonium nitrate, I am ready right now to blow you all sky high.

CAPTAIN
Liberty, come in. Over.

SAILOR
It's dead.

JOKER
Anyone attempts to get off their boat, you all die.

BATMAN
I'm zeroing in.

JOKER
Each of you has a remote to blow off the other boat. The voice is on the ferry.
But it's not the source.

BATMAN
West!

GORDON
Gordon.

BATMAN
I have the Joker's location. Prewitt Building.
Put some along the building offices.

JOKER
At midnight I blow you all up. If however one of you
presses the button, I'll let that boat live. So whose
it going to be? Harvey Dent's most-wanted scum bag
collection? Or the sweet and innocent civilians?
You choose. Oh! And you might want to decide quickly
because...the people on the other boat may not be quite
so noble.

FERRY CAPTAIN
Stay back!

PASSENGER
Well who are you to decide? We ought to talk this over
at least. We don't have to die. Those men had their chance.

CAPTAIN
We are not going to talk about this.

PASSENGER
Why aren't we talking about it?
They're talking over the
same exact thing on the other boat.

CAPTAIN
Let's put it to a vote.

INT. GORDON's HOUSE
Gordon's wife, Barbara, picks up the phone.

BARBARA
Hello?

RAMIREZ
Barbara. It's Anna Ramirez.
Jim needs you to pack up and
put the kids in the car right away.

BARBARA
But the unit's outside?

RAMIREZ
Those cops can't be trusted. Jim needs you away
from them as far as possible. I'll call them off
for ten minutes. And you'll have to move fast.

BARBARA
Where am I supposed to take them?

RAMIREZ
250 52nd street. Leave as soon as the patrol car pulls out.

BARBARA

Harvey talks to Ramirez.

HARVEY

EXT. BUILDING
Gordon is talking to Batman.

GORDON

Batman ignores Gordon and goes. Gordon checks his watch.

GORDON
Two minutes. Then we rush.

BATMAN
Fox, I need picture.

Gordon's phone rings.

GORDON
Hello?

BARBARA
Jim, we're in trouble!

LUCIUS
Okay. We got POV on alpha. Unveiling beta.
It looks like clowns and hostages on 2 floors.
A SWAT team on stairwell.Another SWAT team on the roof.

GORDON
Barbara, calm down!

BARBARA
He has the kids!

HARVEY
Hello Jim.

GORDON
Harvey, where's my family?

HARVEY
Where my family died.

SWAT OFFICER
Blue Team, acquire the target.

BATMAN
Fox, the SWAT's targeting the wrong people!
The clowns are the hostages!

SWAT OFFICER
Red Team go!

The Swat team holds their guns to the clowns.

SWAT OFFICER 1
Don't move.

SWAT OFFICER 2
Take the shot!

BATMAN
Those SWATs are coming in hard.

SWAT OFFICER 1
Clown, put down your gun!

SWAT OFFICER 2
Doctors get down, clear the line of fire!
Freeze!

LUCIUS
You see those bad guys on the floor above?
They're waiting for help with the
SWAT team coming up the elevator.
60 seconds.

INT. FERRY
A man has finished counting votes.

MAN
The tally is 140 against, 396 for.
So go ahead, do it!

MAN
We're still here. That means, they haven't
killed us either.

INT. BUILDING

LUCIUS
Trouble on the floor above.

Batman is surrounded by Swat members. He kicks a rope
and they all start to fall, tied together.

SWAT
Freeze! Or we will shot!
We got him, he's out of the game.
Step away from the edge!
Don't move!

Batman finds Joker.

JOKER
Ah, you made it! I'm so thrilled.

BATMAN
Where's the detonator?

SWAT
Go get him!

INT. FERRY
MAN
You don't want to die. But you don't know how to take
a life. Give it to me. That man will kill you and take
it anyway. No one wants to get their hands dirty. Fine,
I'll do it. Those men on that boat. They made their
choices. They chose to murder and steal. It doesn't make
any sense for us to have to die too.

INT. BUILDING

JOKER
Oh the old familiar places!

SWAT
Hostages are safe.

INT. PRISONERS' FERRY

PRISONER
Give it to me. You can tell I took it by force.
Give it to me and I'll do what you should have did
10 minutes ago.

The guard gives the prisoner the detonator. He throws it
off the ship.

INT.BUILDING

JOKER
We really should stop this fighting.
Otherwise, we'll miss the fireworks!
There won't be any fireworks.

BATMAN
What were you trying to prove?
That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you are?
You're alone!

JOKER
You can't rely on anyone these days.
you got to do everything yourself. don't we?
That's okay. I came prepared.

The Joker takes out another detonator. Batman hits him.


INT.BUILDING

JOKER
It's a funny world that we live in speaking of which,
you know how I got these scars?

BATMAN
No, but I know how you got these!

Batman drops Joker from the building and hangs him
by the wire.

JOKER
Ugh, you. You just couldn't let me go, could you?
This is what happens when an unstoppable force
meets an immovable object. You truly are
incorruptible, aren't you, huh? You won't kill me
out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness.
And I won't kill you. because you're just too much fun!
I think you and I are destined to do this forever.

BATMAN
You'll be in a padded cell forever.

JOKER
Maybe we could share one! You know, they'll be
doubling up the rate this city's inhabitants are
losing their minds.

BATMAN
This city just showed you that it's full of people
ready to believe in good.

JOKER
Until their spirit breaks completely! Until they get
a good look at the real Harvey Dent and all the heroic
things he's done. You didn't think I'd risk losing
the battle for Gotham's soul in a fist fight with you?

JOKER
No. You need an ace
in the hole. Mine's Harvey.

BATMAN
What did you do?

JOKER
I took Gotham's "White Knight" and I
brought him down to our level.
It wasn't hard. You see, madness,
as you know, is like gravity.
All it takes is a little push!

EXT. GORDON'S HOUSE
Gordon is seeking Harvey. Harvey hits him.

HARVEY
This is where they brought her, Gordon.

GORDON

HARVEY

Harvey holds a gun to Gordon's wife.

GORDON
Put the gun down Dent!
Harvey, put down the gun.
Please. Please Harvey. Please.

Harvey points the gun at Gordon's son.

GORDON
Goddamn it, will you
stop pointing the gun at my family?!

HARVEY
We have a winner.

GORDON'S WIFE
No, Jim, stop him!

GORDON
Harvey!Hervey Iپfm sorry! For every thing!
Please, donپft hurt my son.

They hear a siren.

HARVEY
You brought your cops?!

GORDON
All they know is this is a situation.
They donپft know who or what,
theyپfre just creating a perimeter.

HARVEY
You think I want to escape from this?!
There is no escape from this?!

GORDON
You donپft want to hurt the boy, Harvey.

HARVEY
Itپfs not about what I want! Itپfs about whatپfs fair!
You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time!
But you were wrong. The world is cruel. And the only morality
in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased, unprejudiced, fair.
His son's got the same chance she had 50/50.

Batman stops Harvey.

BATMAN
What happened to Rachel wasn't chance. We decided to act.

HARVEY
Then why was it me who was the only one who lost everything?!

BATMAN
It wasn't.

HARVEY

BATMAN
Because you were the best of us. He wanted to prove that even
someone as good as you could fall. And he was right. You're the
one pointing the gun, Harvey. So point it at the people responsible.

HARVEY

Harvey shoots Batman.

HARVEY

GORDON
Harvey, you're right. Rachel's death was my fault.

Harvey points the gun at Gordon's son.

HARVEY
Tell your boy it's going to be alright, Gordon.
Lie like I lied.

GORDON
It's going to be alright, son.

Harvey tosses a coin up . As he is about to catch it ,
Batman tackles him . Batman , Harvey and Gordon's son
disappear outside of the window . Gordon runs up to there ,
and looks out of the window . With the child , Batman is
hanging in midair .Gordon pulls up his son .The son runs up
to his mother. Batman falls down. Gordon runs down the stairs , and

runs up to him .

GORDON'S SON
Daddy! Dad, is he okay?

Batman comes to his senses.

GORDON
Thank you.

BATMAN
You don't have to thank me.

Batman stands up .

GORDON
Yes I do.

BATMAN
The Joker won.

Batman and Gordon look at Harvey's dead body .

BATMAN
Harvey's prosecution,everything he fought for, undone.

GORDON
Every chance we had at fixing our city dies with Harvey's
reputation.

BATMAN
We bet it all on him.

GORDON
The Joker took the best of us and tore it down.
People will lose hope.

BATMAN
They won't. They must never know what he did.

GORDON
Five dead, two of them cops. You can't sweep that up.

BATMAN
But the Joker cannot win.
Gotham needs its true hero.

GORDON
No.

BATMAN
You either die a hero or you live long enough to see
yourself become the villain. I can do those things
because I'm not a hero, unlike Dent. I killed those people.
That's what I can be.

GORDON
No, No! You can't, you're not!

BATMAN
I'm whatever Gotham needs me to be. Call it in. A hero.
Not the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed.
Nothing less than a knight... shining.

GORDON
They'll hunt you.

BATMAN
You'll hunt me. You'll condemn me, set the dogs on me.
Because that's what needs to happen. Because sometimes the
truth isn't good enough. Sometimes people deserve more.
Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

GORDON'S SON
Batman! Batman! Why is he running, Dad?

GORDON
Because we have to chase him.

POLICE
Okay, we're going in! Go, go! Move!

The police chase Batman with dogs.

GORDON's SON
He didn't do anything wrong.

GORDON
Because he's the hero Gotham deserves,
but not the one it needs right now
so we'll hunt him?
because he can take it
because he's not a hero
he's a silent guardian,
a watchful protector
a Dark Knight.
