Any of you so much as thinks the word "parley",
I'll have your guts for garters!
ELIZABETH
Will.
You godless pirate!
BARBOSSA
Welcome back, miss.
You took advantage of our hospitality last time.
It holds fair now you return the favour.
WILL
Barbossa!
ELIZABETH
Will.
WILL
She goes free!
BARBOSSA
What's in your head, boy?
WILL
She goes free.
BARBOSSA
You've only got one shot, and we can't die.
SPARROW
Don't do anything stupid.
Will points the muzzle to himself.
WILL
You can't. I can.
SPARROW
Like that.
BARBOSSA
Who are you?
SPARROW
No one. He's no one. A distant cousin of my aunt's nephew,
twice removed. Lovely singing voice, though. Eunuch.
WILL
My name is Will Turner! My father was Bootstrap Bill Turner.
His blood runs in my veins.
PIRATES
It's the spitting image of old Bootstrap Bill come back to haunt us.
WILL
On my word, do as I say, or I'll pull this trigger, and be lost to
Davy Jones' locker!
BARBOSSA
Name your terms, Mr Turner.
WILL
Elizabeth goes free!
BARBOSSA
Yes, we know that one. Anything else?
WILL
And the crew. The crew are not to be harmed.
BARBOSSA
Agreed.
A few moments later, Elizabeth and Sparrow are forced
to walk the plank.
WILL
Barbossa, you lying bastard. You swore she'd go free.
BARBOSSA
Don't dare impugn me honour, boy.I agreed she'd go free.
It was you who failed to specify when or where.
Though it does seem a shame to lose something so fine,
don't it, lads? So I'll be havin' that dress back before
you go.
Elizabeth takes off the dress and throws it at him. Barbossa
smiles.
BARBOSSA
I always liked you.
ELIZABETH
Goes with your black heart.
Barbossa laughs and puts the dress to his face.
BARBOSSA
It's still warm. Off you go. Come on.
PIRATE
Too long.
Elizabeth is dropped by a pirate into the sea.
Sparrow tries to negotiate with Barbossa.
SPARROW
I'd really rather hoped we were past all this.
BARBOSSA
Jack. Jack! Did you not notice?
That be the same island that we made you governor
of on our last little trip.
SPARROW
I did notice.
BARBOSSA
Perhaps you'll be able to conjure up another
miraculous escape. But I doubt it. Off you go.
SPARROW
Last time you left me a pistol with one shot.
BARBOSSA
By the powers, you're right. Where be Jack's pistol?
Bring it forward.
SPARROW
Seeing as there's two of us, a gentleman would give us
a pair of pistols.
BARBOSSA
It'll be one pistol as before, and you can be the gentleman and shoot the lady,
and starve to death yourself.
Sparrow dives in the sea.
EXT. ISLAND
Sparrow and Elizabeth are an island.
SPARROW
That's the second time I've watched that man take my ship.
ELIZABETH
You were marooned on this island before. We can escape in the
same way.
SPARROW
To what point and purpose, young missy? The Black Pearl is gone.
Unless you have a lot of sails hidden in that bodice...
ELIZABETH
Unlikely.
SPARROW
...young Mr. Turner will be dead long before you can reach him.
ELIZABETH
But you're Captain Jack Sparrow. You vanished from under the eyes
of seven agents of the East India Company. You sacked Nassau port
without even firing a shot. Are you the pirate I've read about or not?
How did you escape last time?
SPARROW
Last time I was here a grand total of three days.
Last time... the rum runners used this island as a cache.
They came by and I was able to barter passage off.
From the looks of things, they've long been out of business.
You probably have your bloody friend Norrington to thank for that.
ELIZABETH
So that's it, then? That's the secret, grand adventure of the
infamous Jack Sparrow. You spent three days lying on a beach drinking rum.
SPARROW
Welcome to the Caribbean, love.
That night, they are singing a song and dancing.
ELIZABETH AND SPARROW
We're devils, we're black sheep We're really bad eggs
Drink up, me hearties, yo ho
EXT. BEACH
It's night time. They are dancing.
SPARROW
A pirate's life for me
I love this song!
Really bad eggs!
When I get the Pearl back,
I'm gonna teach it to the whole crew, and we'll sing it all the time.
ELIZABETH
You will be the most fearsome piratesin the Spanish Main.
SPARROW
Not just the Spanish Main, love.
The entire ocean.The entire world!
Wherever we want to go, we go.That's what a ship is.
It's not just a keel and a hulland a deck and sails.
That's what a ship needs.But what a ship is...
What the Black Pearl really is...is freedom.
EXT. DESERTED ISLAND
They talk while drinking rum.
ELIZABETH
Jack... It must be really terrible for you to be trapped on this island.
SPARROW
Oh, yes. But the company is infinitely better than last time.
And the scenery has definitely improved.
ELIZABETH
Mr Sparrow! I'm not entirely sure I've had enough rum to allow that kind of talk.
SPARROW
I know exactly what you mean, love.
ELIZABETH
To freedom!
SPARROW
To the Black Pearl!
Sparrow wakes up. Elizabeth is burning the rum and trees on the island.
SPARROW
No! Not good! Stop! Not good! What are you doing?
You've burned all the food, the shade, the rum.
ELIZABETH
Yes, the rum is gone.
SPARROW
Why is the rum gone?
ELIZABETH
One, because it is a vile drink that turns respectable men into scoundrels.
Two, that signal is over 1,000 feet high.
The entire Royal Navy is looking for me.
Do you think there is the slightestchance they won't see it?
SPARROW
But why is the rum gone?
ELIZABETH
Just wait, Captain Sparrow. You give it one hour, maybe two,
keep a weather eye open, and you will see white sails on that horizon.
SPARROW
"Must've been terrible for you to be trapped here, Jack." Well, it bloody is now!
Sparrow sees the Dauntless. It has come to rescue them.
SPARROW
There'll be no living with herafter this.
EXT. DAUNTLESS
Elizabeth and Sparrow are aboard the Dauntless. They are talking to Norrington and
Swann.
ELIZABETH
But we've got to save Will.
SWANN
No. You're safe now. We will return to Port Royal immediately,
not go gallivanting after pirates.
ELIZABETH
Then we condemn him to death.
SWANN
The boy's fate is regrettable, butso is his decision to engage in piracy.
ELIZABETH
To rescue me. To prevent anythingfrom happening to me.
SPARROW
If I may be so bold as to interjectmy professional opinion.
The Pearl was listing to scuppers afterthe battle. She won't make good time.
Think about it. The Black Pearl.
The last real pirate threatin the Caribbean, mate.
How can you pass that up?
NORRINGTON
By remembering that I serve others,Mr Sparrow, not only myself.
ELIZABETH
Commodore, I beg you, please do this for me.
As a wedding gift.
SWANN
Elizabeth? Are you accepting the Commodore's proposal?
ELIZABETH
I am.
SPARROW
A wedding. I love weddings.Drinks all around!
I know. "Clap him in irons," right?
NORRINGTON
Mr Sparrow, you will accompany these fine men to the helm
and provide us with a bearingto Isla de Muerta.
Then contemplate all possible meaningsof the phrase "silent as the grave".
SPARROW
Do I make myself clear?
NORRINGTON
Inescapably clear.
INT.BLACKPEARL
Pintel is mopping the floor by the prisoners.
PIRATE
Shiver me timbers. Cotton here says you missed a bit.
WILL
You knew William Turner.
PINTEL
Old Bootstrap Bill, we knew him. Never sat well with Bootstrap, what we
did to Jack Sparrow, the mutiny and all. He said it wasn't right with the Code.
That's why he sent off a piece of the treasure to you. He said we deserved to be cursed,
and remain cursed.
RAGETTI
Stupid blighter.
PIRATES
Good man.
PINTEL
But, as you can imagine, that didn't sit too well with the Captain.
RAGETTI
That didn't sit too well with the Captain at all.
Tell him what Barbossa did.
PINTEL
I'm telling the story!
So what the captain did, he strapped a cannon to Bootstrap's bootstraps.
RAGETTI
Bootstrap's bootstraps!
PINTEL
Last we saw of old Bill Turner, he wassinking into the crushin' black oblivion
of Davy Jones' locker! It was only after that we learnedwe needed his blood to lift the curse.
RAGETTI
That's what you call ironic.
BARBOSSA
Bring him.
INT. BOAT
NORRINGTON
I don't care for the situation. Any attempt to storm the caves could turn into an ambush.
SPARROW
Not if you're the one doing the ambushing.
I go in and get Barbossa to sendhis men out in their little boats.
Your mates return to the Dauntlessand blast them with your cannons.
What do you have to lose?
NORRINGTON
Nothing I'd lament being rid of.
SPARROW
Now, to be honest, there's a riskto those aboard the Dauntless,
which includes the future Mrs Commodore.
CREW
It's for your own safety.
ELIZABETH
I don't care, I have to tell him! The pirates are cursed! They can't be killed!
NORRINGTON
He's already informed of that. A mermaid flopped up on deck and told the story.
ELIZABETH
This is Jack Sparrow's doing!
INT.CAVE
BARBOOSA
No reason to fret. A prick of the finger, a few drops of blood...
PIRATE 1
No mistakes this time. He's only half-Turner. We spill it all!
PIRATE 2
Guess there is reason to fret.
INT.CAVE
SPARROW
Beg your pardon.
BARBOSSA
Begun by blood. By blood...
WILL
Jack!
BARBOSSA
It's not possible.
SPARROW
Not probable.
WILL
Where's Elizabeth?
SPARROW
Safe, like I promised. She's set to marry Norrington, like she promised, and you get to die for her like you promised. So we're all men of our word, exceptb for Elizabeth, who is a woman.
BARBOSSA
Shut up! You're next!
SPARROW
You don't want to be doing that.
BARBOSSA
No, I think I do.
SPARROW
Your funeral.
BARBOSSA
Why don't I want to be doing it?
SPARROW
Because... The HMS Dauntless, pride of the Royal Navy, is floating just off shore waiting for you.
On the boat of the sea.
CREW1
What are we doing here?
CREW2
The pirates come out, unprepared and unawares.
We catch'em in a crossfire and send'em down to see Old Hob.
CREW1
I meant, why aren't we doing what Mr. Sparrow said we should do? With the cannons and all?
NORRINGTON
Because it was Mr. Sparrow who said it.
CREW1
You think he wasn't telling the truth?
INT. CAVE
Sparrow talk to Barbossa.
SPARROW
Hear me out, mate.
Order your men to row out to the Dauntless, they do what they do best,
Robert's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt... There you are with two ships.
The makings of your own fleet. You'll take the grandest as your flagship and who's to argue?
But what of the Pearl? Name me captain, I'll sail under your colours and give you 10% of me plunder and you get to introduce yourself as Commodore Barbossa. Savvy?
BARBOSSA
And in exchange you want me not to kill the whelp.
SPARROW
Not at all. By all means, kill the whelp. Just not yet. Wait to lift the curse until the opportune moment. For instance... after you've killed Norrington's men.
SPARROW
Every...
Sparrow picked up one coin.
SPARROW
Last...
Sparrow covered a coin in a hand.
SPARROW
One.
BALBOSSA
You've planned this ever since you learned my name.
SPARROW
Yeah.
BALBOSSA
I want 50% of your plunder.
BALBOSSA
15.-40.
SPARROW
25. I'll buy you the hat. A really big one.
BLACK MAN
Commodore.
BALBOSSA
We have an accord.
SPARROW
All hands to the boats!
SPARROW
Apologies. You give the orders.
BALBOSSA
Gents... take a walk!
SPARROW
Not to the boats?
PIRATE
Hold fire. This is like what the Greeks done at Troy.
NORRINGTON
Except they was in a horse, instead of dresses. Wooden horse. A moment, please.
SPARROW
Elizabeth?
ELIZABETH
I want you to know I believe you made a very good decision today.
SPARROW
Couldn't be more proud of you.
ELIZABETH
But a good decision, if made for thewrong reasons, can be a wrong decision. Lieutenant.
SPARROW
Elizabeth?
SWANN
Are you even listening to me?
Elizabeth is gone. Swann sees a rope outside her window.
SWANN
What have you done?
EXT. ROWBOAT
Pintel and Ragetti are dressed like women in a rowboat to distract the crew.
PINTEL
Stop that! I already feel like a fool.
RAGETTI
You look nice, though.
PINTEL
I look nice?
Pintel hits Ragetti. This alerts Norrington's crew.
INT. CAVE
BARBOSSA
I must admit, Jack, I thought I had you figured but it turns out you're a hard man to predict.
SPARROW
I'm dishonest. And a dishonest man you can trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you want to watch out for. You can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid.
Sparrow attacks Barbossa's men. Will breaks free and helps him.
BARBOSSA
You're off the edge of the map, mate. Here there be monsters!
CREW
Right.
CREW
What would you eat first?
BARBOSSA’S CREW1
We should decide now
BARBOSSA’S CREW2
so we're ready when the time comes. What was that?
EXT. INTERCEPTOR
Elizabeth reaches the Interceptor. Gibbs is surprised to see her.
GIBBS
Miss Elizabeth!
NORRINGTON
Make for the ship! Move! To the ship! Row, men!
INT. CAVE
Barbossa and Sparrow continue to fight.
BARBOSSA
You can't beat me, Jack.
He stabs Sparrow, but Sparrow doesn't die. Sparrow shows him the coin he stole. He
can't die either.
SPARROW
That's interesting. I couldn't resist, mate. Sorry!
BARBOSSA
What now, Jack Sparrow? Are we to be two immortals, locked in an epic battle until Judgment Day?
SPARROW
Or you could surrender.
EXT. INTERCEPTOR
ELIZABETH
All of you with me. Will is in that cave and we must save him.
Ready, and... heave! I need your help. Come on!
PARROT
Any port in a storm.
GIBBS
Cotton's right. We've got the Pearl.
ELIZABETH
Are you gonna leave Jack?
ANA MARIA
Jack owes us a ship.
GIBBS
There's the Code to consider.
ELIZABETH
The Code? You're pirates. Hang the Code and hang the rules! They're more like guidelines.
Elizabeth is rowing alone.
ELIZABETH
Bloody pirates!
MULLROY
Is it supposed to be doing that? They're stealing our ship. Bloody pirates!
INT. DAUNTLESS Pirates are fighting with the soldiers. SOLDIER Boarders away. PINTEL Come on! Ragetti drops his eye. RAGETTI Me eye! INT. CAVE Elizabeth comes to the place where Will and Sparrow are fighting with the pirate. BARBOSSA I'll teach you the meaning of pain. ELIZABETH You like pain? Try wearing a corset. Whose side is Jack on? WILL At the moment? PIRATE No fair! Sparrow shoots Barbossa with the gun. BARBOSSA Ten years you carry that pistol and now you waste your shot. WILL He didn't waste it. The curse is lifted by Will. BARBOSSA I feel...cold. Barbossa dies. The Black Pearl crew return to men. PINTEL Parley? NORRINGTON The ship is ours, gentlemen. SOLDIER Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! INT. CAVE ELIZABETH We should return to the Dauntless. WILL Your fiance will want to know you're safe. Elizabeth leaves. SPARROW If you were waiting for the opportune moment... that was it. Now, I'd be much obliged if you'd drop me off at my ship. ELIZABETH I'm sorry, Jack. SPARROW They done what's right by them. Can't expect more than that. EXT. PORT ROYAL Sparrow is about to be executed. SOLDIER Jack Sparrow... SPARROW Captain Jack Sparrow. SOLDIER ...for your crimes against the Crown. Said crimes being numerous in quantity and sinister in nature. The most egregious of these to be cited herewith: Piracy, smuggling... ELIZABETH This is wrong. SWANN Commodore Norrington is boundby the law, as are we all. SOLDIER impersonating an officer of the Spanish Royal Navy, impersonating a clericof the Church of England, sailing under false colours, arson, kidnapping, looting, poaching, brigandage, pilfering, depravity, depredationand general lawlessness. For these crimes, you are sentencedto be hung by the neck until dead. May God have mercy on your soul. WILL Governor Swann. Sparrow's execution will be done soon. WILL Commodore. Elizabeth. Will approaches Elizabeth. WILL I should have told you every day from the moment I met you... I love you. Watch yourself! Will begins to walk to Sparrow. Norrington notices Will's idea, and shouts. NORRINGTON Marines! Elizabeth tries to avert everyone's attention, and she falls. ELIZABETH I can't breathe. SWANN Elizabeth! Will elbows his way through the person and he is advancing. WILL Move! Will helps Sparrow. Two people fight against Norrington's men. However, they are surrounded. NORRINGTON I thought we might have to endure some ill-conceived escape attempt, but not from you. SWANN On our return to Port Royal,I granted you clemency. And this is how you thank me?By throwing in your lot with him? He's a pirate. WILL And a good man. If this means the hangman will earn two pairs of boots instead of one, so be it. My conscience will be clear. NORRINGTON You forget your place, Turner. WILL It's right here, between you and Jack. ELIZABETH As is mine. WILL Elizabeth. SWANN Lower your weapons.Put them down! NORRINGTON So this is where your heart truly lies? ELIZABETH It is. SPARROW I'm feeling good about this. We've all arrived at a special place. Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically. I want you to knowthat I was rooting for you, mate. Know that. Elizabeth. It would never have worked between us, darling. I'm sorry. Will. Nice hat. Friends. This is the day that you will always remember as the day that... GILLETTE Idiot. He's nowhere to go but back to the noose. Sail ho! What's your plan of action? Norrington doesn't respond. GILLETTE Sir! SWANN Perhaps on the rare occasion, pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy.Piracy itself can be the right course.NORRINGTON
Mr Turner.
WILL
I will accept the consequencesof my actions.
Norrington draws his sword.
NORRINGTON
This is a beautiful sword. I expect the man who made it
to show the same care and devotion in every aspect of his life.
WILL
Thank you.
GILLETTE
Commodore! What about Sparrow?
NORRINGTON
I think we can afford to give him one day's head start.
Swann looks at his daughter.
SWANN
So...This is the path you've chosen, is it?
After all, he is a blacksmith.
ELIZABETH
No. He's a pirate.
EXT. BLACK PEARL
Sparrow talks to Gibbs
SPARROW
Thought you were supposed to keep to the Code?
GIBBS
We figured they were more actual... guidelines.
SPARROW
Thank you.
GIBBS
Captain Sparrow. The Black Pearl is yours.
On deck, you scabrous dogs! Handsto braces! Let go and haul to run free!
SPARROW
Now... bring me that horizon. And really bad eggs
Drink up, me hearties. Yo ho!
THE END
Questions
1. Why does Norrington agree to help Elizabeth save Will?
2. What happens to Barbossa in the end?
