Elizabeth is singing a song.
ELIZABETH
Drink up, me hearties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up, me hearties, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho
A pirate's life for me
We extort, we pilfer
We filch, we sack...
GIBBS
Quiet, missy! Cursed pirates sail these waters.
You don't want to bring them down on us.
NORRINGTON
Mr Gibbs, that will do.
GIBBS
She was singing about pirates!
Bad luck to sing about pirates with us mired in this unnatural fog.
Mark my words.
NORRINGTON
Consider them marked. On your way.
GIBBS
Aye, Lieutenant.Bad luck to have a woman on board, too. Even a miniature one.
SWANN
It'd be exciting to meet a pirate.
NORRINGTON
Think again, Miss Swann.Vile creatures, the lot of them.
I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag
gets what he deserves.
Norrington pauses.ELIZABETH

NORRINGTON
A short drop and a sudden stop.
Gibbs pantomimes a man being hanged. Elizabeth is distressed.
SWANN
I appreciate your fervour, but I'm concerned about the effect this
subject will have upon my daughter.
NORRINGTON
My apologies, Governor Swann.
ELIZABETH
Actually, I find it all fascinating.
SWANN
That's what concerns me.
Elizabeth sees a boy in the sea.
ELIZABETH
There's a boy in the water!
NORRINGTON
Man overboard!
GIBBS
Man the ropes! Fetch a hook! Haul him aboard!
They bring the boy aboard. He is unconscious.
ELIZABETH
He's still breathing.
A sailor finds that a ship is burning.
SAILOR 1
Mary, Mother of God!
NORRINGTON
What happened here?
SAILOR 1
Most likely the powder magazine.Merchant vessels run heavily armed.
SAILOR 2
Lot of good it did them.Everyone's thinking it, I'm saying it.
Pirates!
SWANN
There's no proof of that! It was probably an accident.
NORRINGTON
Rouse the captain. Heave to and take in sail. Launch the boats.
SWANN
Elizabeth, accompany the boy.
He'll be in your charge.Take care of him.
Will wakes up.
ELIZABETH
It's okay. My name's Elizabeth Swann.
WILL
Will Turner.
ELIZABETH
I'm watching over you, Will.
Elizabeth sees that Will is wearing a gold medallion.
ELIZABETH
You're a pirate!
Norrington walks over. Elizabeth hides the medallion.
NORRINGTON
Has he said anything?
ELIZABETH
His name's William Turner. That's all I found out.
NORRINGTON
Take him below.
SWANN
Elizabeth!
INT. ELIZABETH'S BEDROOM
Swann visits Elizabeth in the morning.
SWANN
Are you all right? Are you decent?
ELIZABETH
Yes.
SWANN
Still abed at this hour? It's a beautiful day. I have a gift for you.
Swann gives Elizabeth a beautiful dress.
ELIZABETH
It's beautiful!
SWANN
Isn't it?
ELIZABETH
May I inquire as to the occasion?
SWANN
Does a father need an occasionto dote upon his daughter?Go on.Actually...
I had hoped you might wear it for the ceremony today.
ELIZABETH
The ceremony?
SWANN
Captain Norrington's promotion ceremony.
ELIZABETH
I knew it!
SWANN
Commodore Norrington,as he's about to become.A fine gentleman, don't you think? He fancies you, you know.Elizabeth? How's it coming?
ELIZABETH
It's difficult to say.
SWANN
It's the latest fashion in London.
ELIZABETH
Women in London must've learned not to breathe!
Will comes over to Swann's house with the article he has ordered.
BUTLER
My Lord, you have a visitor.
SWANN
Mr. Turner! Good to see you again. Will shows Swann a sword.
WILL
Good day, sir. I have your order. The blade is folded steel. That's gold filigree laid into the handle. If I may? Perfectly balanced. The tangis nearly the width of the blade.
Will throws the sword to the air and catches it.
WILL
Perfectly balanced. The tang is nearly the width of the blade.
SWANN
Impressive. Very impressive.Commodore Norrington'sgoing to be very pleased with this.Do pass my compliments on to your master.
WILL
I shall.A craftsman is always pleased to hear his work is appreciated.
Elizabeth comes downstairs.
SWANN
Elizabeth!You look absolutely stunning!
ELIZABETH
I had a dream about you last night.
WILL
About me?
SWANN
Elizabeth, is that proper...?
ELIZABETH
About the day we met. Remember?
WILL
How could I forget, Miss Swann?
ELIZABETH
How many times must I ask you to call me Elizabeth?
WILL
At least once more, Miss Swann. As always.
SWANN
There. See? At least the boy has a sense of propriety. We really must be going. Good day, Mr Turner. Come along!
Will watchs Elizabeth leave.
WILL
Good day...
EXT.PORT ROYAL
Sparrow sails into the wharf. His ship is sinking. He steps onto the dock.
WHARFMAN
Hold up there, you! It's a shilling to tie up your boat to the dock.
I need to know your name.
SPARROW
What do you say to three shillings and we forget the name?
WHARFMAN
Welcome to Port Royal, Mr Smith.
EXT.SWANN'S CASTLE
A ceremony is being held for Norrington.
SAILOR
Two paces... march! Right about... face! Present... arms!
EXT. DOCK
Sparrow tries to approach a ship, but two guards stop him.
MURTOGG
This dock is off limits to civilians.
SPARROW
I'm terribly sorry, I didn't know.If I see one, I shall inform you.
There's some high-tonedand fancy to-do at the fort.
How could it be that two upstanding gentlemen did not merit an invitation?
MURTOGG
We have to make sure this dock stays off limits to civilians.
SPARROW
It's a fine goal, to be sure, but it seems to me, a ship like that makes this one here a bit superfluous.
MURTOGG
The Dauntless is the power in these waters,
but there's no ship that can match the Interceptor for speed.
SPARROW
I've heard of one. It's supposed to be fast, nigh uncatchable. The Black Pearl.
MULLROY
There's no real ship that can match the Interceptor.
MURTOGG
The Black Pearl is a real ship.
MULLROY
No, it's not.
MURTOGG
It is. I've seen it!
MULLROY
You've seen it?
MURTOGG
Yes.
MULLROY
You haven't seen it!
MURTOGG
Yes, I have!
MULLROY
You've seen a ship with black sails, that's crewed by the damned
and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?
MURTOGG
No.
MULLROY
No.
MURTOGG
But I have seen a ship with black sails.
MULLROY
No ship not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil, Hell spat him back out,
could have black sails, so couldn't be any other ship than The Black Pearl.
Is that what you're saying?
MURTOGG
No.
MULLROY
Like I said, there's no real ship that can match the Interceptor...
Sparrow goes aboard the ship without permission.
MULLROY
You! Get away from there! You don't have permission to be aboard!
SPARROW
I'm sorry, but it's such a pretty boat. Ship!
MURTOGG
What's your name?
SPARROW
Smith! Or Smithy, if you like.
MURTOGG
What's your purpose in Port Royal,'Mr Smith'?
MULLROY
And no lies!
SPARROW
All right. I confess. I intend to commandeer a ship, pick up a crew in Tortuga, rape, pillage and otherwise pilfer my black guts out.
MULLROY
I said no lies!
MURTOGG
I think he's telling the truth.
MULLROY
If he were telling the truth,he wouldn't have told us.
MURTOGG
Unless he knew you wouldn't believe the truth even if he told you.
EXT.CLIFF
Norrington speaks to Elizabeth.
NORRINGTON
May I have a moment?
You look lovely, Elizabeth. I apologize if I seem forward, but I must speak my mind. This promotion throws into sharp relief that which I have not yet achieved. A marriage to a fine woman. You have become a fine woman.
Elizabeth mutters.
ELIZABETH
I can't breathe!
NORRINGTON
Yes, I'm a bit nervous myself.
Elizabeth falls from the cliff. Norrington doesn't notice.
NORRINGTON
Then they made me their chief. Elizabeth! Elizabeth! The rocks!
MURTOGG
Sir, it's a miracle she missed them!
SPARROW
Will you be saving her?-
MURTOGG
I can't swim!
SPARROW
Pride of the King's Navy, you are!Do not lose these.
Sparrow gives the sailor his things. Jack jumps into the sea.
When Elizabeth's medallion makes contact with the sea, it calls
out to the pirates.
MULLROY
What was that?
Sparrow saves Elizabeth. He swims to the dock.
SPARROW
I got her!
MULLROY
She's not breathing!
SPARROW
Move!
MURTOGG
I never would've thought of that.
SPARROW
You've never been to Singapore.
Sparrow sees Elizabeth's medallion.
SPARROW
Where did you get that?
NORRINGTON
On your feet. Elizabeth! Are you all right?
ELIZABETH
I'm fine.
NORRINGTON
Shoot him!
ELIZABETH
Father! Commodore, do you intend to kill my rescuer?
SPARROW
I believe thanks are in order.
NORRINGTON
Had a brush with the East India Trading Company, pirate?
Sparrow is captured.
SWANN
Hang him!
NORRINGTON
Keep your guns on him, men.Gillette, fetch some irons. Well, well. Jack Sparrow, isn't it?
SPARROW
Captain Jack Sparrow,if you please, sir.
NORRINGTON
I don't see your ship... 'Captain'.
SPARROW
I'm in the market, as it were.
CREW1
He said he'd come to commandeer one.
Norrington looks at Sparrow's possessions.
NORRINGTON
A compass that doesn't point north.
I half expected it to be made from wood.
You are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of!
SPARROW
But you have heard of me.
ELIZABETH
Commodore, I must protest!
NORRINGTON
Carefully, Lieutenant.
ELIZABETH
Pirate or not, this man saved my life!
NORRINGTON
One good deed is not enough to redeem a man for his wickedness!
SPARROW
It seems enough to condemn him.
NORRINGTON
Indeed.
Elizabeth protects Sparrow. Sparrow grabs her.
SPARROW
Finally.
SWANN
Don't shoot!
SPARROW
I knew you'd warm up to me.
Commodore Norrington,my effects, please.
And my hat. Commodore. Elizabeth... it is
Elizabeth?
ELIZABETH
It's Miss Swann.
SPARROW
Miss Swann, if you'd be so kind. Come, dear, we don't
have all day. If you'll be very kind. Easy on the goods, darling.
ELIZABETH
You're despicable.
SPARROW
Sticks and stones, love. I saved your life, you saved mine. We're square.
Gentlemen, my lady, you will always remember this as the day you almost caught...
Captain Jack Sparrow!
Sparrow escapes.
SWANN
Now will you shoot him?
The soldiers shoot at Sparrow.
NORRINGTON
Open fire! On his heels! Take cover, man!
Gillette, Mr. Sparrow has a dawn appointment with the gallows.
I would hate for him to miss it.
Sparrow is escaping to soldier and Norrington.
Soldier looks for Sparrow. Sparrow runs into into the blacksmith.
SOLDIER1
Search up the stairs!
SOLDIER2
Look lively, men!
WILL come back to blacksmith.
WILL
Right where I left you.
Not where I left you.
You're the one they're hunting.
The pirate!
SPARROW
You seem familiar.Have I threatened you before?
WILL
I avoid familiarity with pirates.
SPARROW
It would be a shame to put a blackmark on your record. Excuse me.
Do you think this wise, boy?Crossing blades with a pirate?
Sparrow and Will are fighting.
SPARROW
Do you think this wise, boy?Crossing blades with a pirate?
WILL
You threatened Miss Swann.
SPARROW
Only a little.
Sparrow and Will begin to duel. Sparrow gives him a compliment.
SPARROW
You know what you're doing. Excellent form. How's your footwork?
They circle each other.
SPARROW
If I step here...Good. And now I step again.
Sparrow tries to escape through the door, but Will throws his sword and
blocks his escape.
SPARROW
Ta. That is a wonderful trick.
SPARROW
Except, once again, you are between me and my way out.
And now...you have no weapon. Who makes all these?
They begin to fight again.
WILL
I do. And I practice with them three hours a day.
SPARROW
You need to find yourself a girl, mate. Or, the reason you practice
three hours a day is that you already found one
and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet.
You're not a eunuch, are you?
WILL
I practice three hours a day so when I meet a pirate, I can kill him!
Sparrow points a gun at Will.
WILL
You cheated!
SPARROW
Pirate. Move away!
WILL
No.
SPARROW
Please?
WILL
No! I cannot just step aside and let you escape.
SPARROW
This shot is not meant for you.
Mr. Brown hits Sparrow in the head from behind with a bottle. Sparrow
falls unconscious.
SOLDIER
There he is! Over here!
NORRINGTON
Excellent work, Mr Brown. You've assisted in the capture of a fugitive.
BROWN
Just doing my civic duty, sir.
NORRINGTON
I trust you will remember this as the day Captain Jack Sparrow almost escaped.
GOVERNOR GENERAL
Take him away.
INT. PRISON
Prisoners are calling to a dog, holding out a bone. He is holding the key to their cell.
PRISONER 1
Come here, boy. Come here. Who wants a juicy bone?
PRISONER 2
Come here, boy!
SPARROW
You can keep doing that forever. The dog is never going to move.
PRISONER 3
Excuse us if we haven't resigned ourselves to the gallows just yet.
INT. ELIZABETH'S BEDROOM
The maid puts some hot coals in Elizabeth's bed to warm it.
MAID
There you go, miss. It was a difficult day for you, I'm sure.
ELIZABETH
I suspected Commodore Norrington would propose, but I wasn't prepared for it.
MAID
I meant you being threatened by that pirate! Sounds terrifying!
ELIZABETH
Yes, it was terrifying.
MAID
But... the Commodore proposed! Fancy that. That's a smart match, miss, if
it's not too bold to say.
ELIZABETH
It is a smart match. He's a fine man. He's what any woman should dream of marrying.
MAID
That Will Turner...he's a fine man, too.
ELIZABETH
That is too bold.
MAID
Beggin' your pardon. It was not my place.
The candle blows out. Elizabeth senses something is wrong.
INT. SMITHY
Will is working on a sword. He senses something is wrong too. He looks out his window
and sees some fog.
EXT. CASTLE
Swann and Norrington are walking along the castle walls.
SWANN
Has my daughter given you an answer yet?
NORRINGTON
No, she hasn't.
SWANN
She has had a trying day. Ghastly weather, don't you think?
NORRINGTON
Really bleak.
Swann hears something.
SWANN
What's that?
Norrington pushes Swann to the ground.
NORRINGTON
Cannon fire! Return fire!
INT. PRISON
The prisoners listen to the cannons.
SPARROW
I know those guns. It's the Pearl.
PRISONER
The Black Pearl? I've heard stories.
She's been preying on ships and settlements for ten years.
Never leaves any survivors.
SPARROW
No survivors? Then where do the stories come from, I wonder?
Questions
1. Why does Elizabeth hide Will's medallion?
2. What happens when Elizabeth falls into the water?
3. What happens to Sparrow after his fight with Will?
