Green Mile Part 5

INT. MEDICAL SUPPLY ROOM
There are a lot of bottles of pills in the dark room.
Paul and Brutal smash and gather sleeping pills.

PAUL
Oh, there it is.

BRUTAL
Oh, I see it. You think this is enough?

PAUL
I don't know.

INT. GREEN MILE
Percy reads an erotic book covered with another book. Paul and Brutal
bring bottles of juice. Dean and Harry take the bottles.

BRUTAL
You fellas thirsty? Fresh out of the icebox.

DEAN
You bet. That's swell, Brutal. Thanks.

BRUTAL
Oh, yeah.

HARRY
Hot in here. Boy, howdy.

Wild Bill gets up.

WILD BILL
Hey, hey. l'm gonna get some too, ain't l?

BRUTUS
My ass, you get some too.

PAUL
What makes you think you deserve any?

WILD BILL
Because I got a big pecker.

HARRY
Well, the day report says he's been okay.

WILD BILL
Hell, yeah, l been behaved. Come on, now. Don't be stingy hogs.

Paul sets sleeping pills in the cup of juice.
He takes Wharton a cup.

WILD BILL
Come on. Come on now, fellers. Come on, boss. I been good all day.
It's hot in here. It's hot in this cell, and I'm dogged to drink.
l'm thirsty.

WILD BILL
Why don't you give me some? Come on.

Paul approaches Wild Bill.

PAUL
You gonna stay behaved?

WILD BILL
Come on, you clunk, give me that.

PAUL
You promise me...or l'll drink this myself right here.

Paul pretends to drink it.

WILD BILL
Don't-- Come on, now. Don't be that way. I'll be good.

Paul gives Wild Bill the drink. Wild Bill belches.

PAUL
Cup.

Paul receives the cup and goes back.

Wild Bill faints.

PAUL
Anybody wants out, now's the time.
After this, there's no turning back.
So? We gonna do this?

COFFEY
Sure. That'd be just fine. I'd like to take a ride.

BRUTUS
Guess we're all in.

INT. GUARD ROOM
Percy is reading a book.  All the guards come in and surround him.

PERCY
What is this?

PAUL
Payback.

BRUTUS
That's right.

Percy is trying to escape, but Brutus and Harry grab him.

PERCY
No, you let me go! Let go of me!

PAUL
Settle down.

PERCY
Let go!

PAUL
Settle down.

PERCY
What are you doing?

PAUL
Settle down.

Brutus finds Percy's erotic comic strip.

BRUTUS
Ooh. "Miss Lotta Leadpipe." Oh, Percy. What would your mother say?

PERCY
You let go of me, you ignoramus. I know people. Big people!

PAUL
Percy, stick out your arms like a good lad.

PERCY
No, I won't do it. You can't make me.

PAUL
You're dead wrong about that, you know.

Brutus grabs Percy's ears.  Percy screams.

PAUL
You gonna put your arms up? A big man is ripping your ears off.
I'd do as he says.

PERCY
Aah!

Percy puts his arms up.  They put a straitjacket on him.

PAUL
There you go.

PERCY
Please, Paul. Please don't put me in with Wild Bill. Please don't.

Paul looks at him with disgust.

PAUL
You would think that.

They put him in the closet.

PERCY
No, no, you can't do this to me.
You can't do this to me. You can't.

PAUL
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, Percy.
We can and we are.

He puts a cloth into Percy's mouth. Percy sobs.

PAUL
We'll give you a few hours of quiet time to reflect on what you did to Del.

BRUTAL
And if you get lonely, just think about Miss Leadpipe.

PAUL
All right, let's go over it one more time.
What do you say if somebody stops by?

DEAN
Coffey got upset after lights out...so we put the coat on him,
locked him in the restraint room.

DEAN
They hear kicking, they'll think it's him.

PAUL
What about me?

DEAN
You're in Admin pulling Del's file, going over the witnesses...
...on account of how big a screwup the execution was.

COFFEY
We going for the ride now?

PAUL
That's right. We going for the ride.

BRUTUS
What about us, Dean?

DEAN
You, Harry, Percy, all down in the laundry doing your wash.
Probably take a few hours before you're back.

They let Coffey out of his cell.  Wild Bill regains consciousness and grabs
Coffey's arm.  Coffey staggers.

WILD BILL
Where you think you going?

COFFEY
You a bad man.

WILD BILL
That's right, nigger. Bad as you'd want.
What's wrong?

A light bulb breaks.

Wild Bill lets go of Coffey.

WILD BILL
Whoo! Whole room.... Whole room's spinning. It's like l'm shitty-ass drunk.
Had me some shine or.... Or what? Niggers ought to have their own electric
chair. White man ought not to have to sit in no nigger electric chair. No, sir.

COFFEY
He a bad man.

EXT. FIELD
The guards are walking outside.  Coffey looks at the stars.

COFFEY
Look, boss. lt's Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair.

Paul looks at Coffey. Paul whispers.

PAUL
Shh! John, we have to be quiet now.

Coffey points at the stars.

COFFEY
You see her? You see the lady?

BRUTAL
Yeah, we see her, John. Come on.

PAUL
Let's go. Go, go! Now!

Coffey picks up some grass and smells it.  He holds it out to Paul and Brutus, who inhale the
smell of the grass too. Paul looks at Coffey.

PAUL
All right, big boy. Let's get moving. Come on. Upsy-daisy.

John gets in the truck. Paul looks at Coffey.

PAUL
John, do you know where we're taking you tonight?

Coffey looks at Paul.

COFFEY
Help a lady?

Brutal looks at Coffey.

BRUTAL
That's right. But how do you know?

Coffey looks at Brutal.

COFFEY
Don't know. Tell the truth, boss, I don't know much of anything. I never have.

Paul knocks on the truck.

The truck leaves.

EXT. WARDEN'S HOUSE

Paul and Brutus get out of the truck.

BRUTUS
We can still turn back.

COFFEY
Boss, look. Someone's up.

The Warden's house lights up.

BRUTUS
This was a mistake. Oh, Christ, what were we thinking?

PAUL
lt's too late now. John, you stay. Harry, you keep John here
till we call you.

Hal comes out from the house with a rifle.

HAL
Who the hell goes there at 2:30
in the goddamn morning?

PAUL
Hal, it's us. lt's Paul and Brutal.
lt's us.

HALJesus.
It isn't a lockdown, is it? Or a riot?

PAUL
No. Hal, for God's sakes, just take your finger off the trigger.

HAL
Are you hostages?

PAUL
Hal, listen!

Coffey gets out and walks toward Hal.

HAL
Halt or l'll shoot! l said, halt! Halt!

PAUL
Hal, put the gun down!

A woman's cry can be heard.

MELINDA
Hal. Hal! Hal, who you talking to down there? Goddamn it!

PAUL
Hal, now, nobody is hurt. And we are here to help.

HAL
Help what? l don't understand.

PAUL
You're just gonna have to trust me.

Coffey approaches HAL.

WARDEN
What do you want?

MELINDA
Hal! Make them go away! I don't want no salesmen...
...in the middle of the night. Tell them to take a flying fuck
at a rolling....

COFFEY
Just to help. Just to help, boss. That's all.

HAL
You can't. No one can.

Melinda is crying and moaning. Coffey takes the gun from Hal.

MELINDA
Stay out of here!

Coffey enters the house.

HAL
Don't you go in there!

MELINDA
Whoever you are, just stay out!

HAL
Paul, I don't want him up there.

COFFEY
Boss......you just be quiet now.

Coffey goes up upstairs.

PAUL
It's all right, Hal. It's all right. Hal, watch. Just watch him.

Melinda is in bed.  Coffey sits next to her slowly.

MELINDA
Don't come near me, pig fucker. Why do you have so many scars?
Who hurt you so badly?

COFFEY
Don't hardly remember, ma'am.

MELINDA
What's your name?

COFFEY
John Coffey, ma'am. Like the drink.......only not spelt the same.
Ma'am?

MELINDA
Yes, John Coffey?

COFFEY
I see it.

Coffey begins to take the illness out of Melinda.  The house shakes.  Some lightbulbs pop.

MELINDA
What's happening?

COFFEY
Shh, you be still now. You be so quiet and so still.

Coffey takes the illness out of her, and keeps it inside him.  He coughs a little on his
hands and knees.

PAUL
Come on, John. Sick it up.

BRUTAL
Come on. Cough it out like you done before. He's choking. Whatever he sucked out of her,
he's choking on it.

John is coughing.

PAUL
John.

COFFEY
I'll be fine. Just let me be.

Hal and his wife look at each other.

MELINDA
How did I get here? We were going to the hospital in Vicksburg. Remember?

HAL
Shh, Melly...it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter anymore.

Hal strokes Melinda’s face.

MELINDA
Did I have the x-ray? Did I?

PAUL
Yes. lt was clear. There was no tumor.

Hal starts crying.

PAUL
John, can you stand up? Can you turn around and see this lady?

John looks tired and sick. John has a cough.

MELINDA
What's your name?

COFFEY
John Coffey, ma'am.

MELINDA
Like the drink. Only not spelt the same.

COFFEY
No, ma'am, not spelt the same at all.

Melinda gets out of bed and approaches John.

HAL
Melly.... No, you can't.

MELINDA
I dreamed of you. I dreamed you were wandering in the dark. And so
was l. And we found each other. We found each other in the dark.

She offers Coffey a pendant.

PAUL
Take it, John. lt's a present.

MELINDA
It's St. Christopher. I want you to have it, Mr. Coffey. And wear it.
He'll keep you safe. Please. Wear it for me.

COFFEY
Thank you, ma'am.

MELINDA
Thank you, John.

Paul and Brutus are helping Coffey to walk.

BRUTUS
Christ, he goes down, it'll take three mules and a crane to pick him up again.

DEAN
Take it easy, John. You gotta stay on your feet.

Coffey is coughing.

BRUTUS
He'll never sit in Old Sparky. You know that, don't you?
He swallowed that stuff for a reason. I give him a few days.
One of us will be doing a cell check, and he'll be dead on his bunk.

PAUL
Well, if that's his choice, he's earned it. Let's just get him back
on the Mile.

INT. GREEN MILE
They all return.

DEAN
Am l happy to see you. You were gone so long. Wild Bill's making noise
like he's waking up.

He looks at Coffey.  Coffey looks sick.

DEAN
What the hell happened to him?

BRUTUS
He's hurting, Dean. He's hurting bad. Okay, John. We gonna...
...set you down on your bed now. Here we go.

DEAN
Well? What about Mrs. Moores? Was it like the mouse?
Was it...you know, a miracle?

PAUL
Yes. Yes, it was.

DEAN
Damn.

INT. CLOSET
Paul and Brutus go to the closet where they kept Percy. Percy is sitting down
and frightened.

PAUL
Now...l want to talk, not shout. I take that tape off, you gonna be calm?

PERCY
Mm-hmm.

BRUTUS
My mother always says you do it fast, it won't hurt so much.

Paul removes the tape stuck on Percy's mouth.
Percy's face is distorted by pain.

PERCY
Mmm! Mmm!

BRUTUS
Guess she was wrong.

Percy is coughing.  He struggles with the straitjacket.

PERCY
Let me out of this nut-coat.

PAUL
ln a minute.

PERCY
Now! Right now! I want out now--! Aah!

Paul slaps Percy.

PAUL
Shut up and listen. You deserved to be punished for what you did to Del.
Accept it like a man. Or else we'll make you sorry you were ever born.
We'll tell people...how you sabotaged Del's execution...

PERCY
Sabotaged?

PAUL
...how you pissed yourself like a frightened little girl. Yes, we will talk.
But, Percy...you mind me, now. We'll also see you beaten within an inch of
your life. We know people too. Are you so foolish, you don't realize that?
Let bygones be bygones, hmm? Nothing's hurt so far but your pride. No one
ever need know about that, except the people in this little room.

BRUTUS
What happens on the Mile stays on the Mile. Always has.

PERCY
Hmm. May I be let out of this coat now?

Paul and Brutus remove the straitjacket.

PERCY
My things?

They return Percy's things.

PAUL
Think it over, Percy.

PERCY
Oh, l intend to. I intend to think it over very hard. Starting right now.

BRUTUS
He'll talk. Sooner or later.

Suddenly, Coffey grabs Percy.

HARRY
Hey, let him go!

PAUL
John, let go! Let go, John!

BRUTAL
John, goddamn it! Let him go!

PAUL
Let go, John! No!

Coffey holds Percy close, then breathes the sickness from Melinda into Percy.

PERCY
Aah!

PAUL
Back off! John, stop it! Stop it, John!

BRUTUS
Let him go! Back off!

PAUL
John, let him go!

PAUL
John, let him go!

BRUTAL
Oh, my God!

Coffey finally lets Percy go. Percy's face is blank.  Paul and Brutus support Percy, but
he moves away from them.

PAUL
Easy, now. Easy. Easy. Hey. Percy. Are you all right?

Percy walks slowly to Wild Bill's cell, and looks at him.

WILD BILL
Boy, what you looking at? What you looking at? You limp noodle.
You wanna kiss my ass? You wanna suck my dick?

Percy shoots Wild Bill dead.

ALL
No!

BRUTAL
Grab the gun! Grab the gun!

DEAN
No, no. No, no. Oh, no.

Percy collapses, gasping.  His mouth opens and small bugs fly out.  He goes unconscious.
