Robert sets a trap and captures one of the monsters.

INT. LABORATORY
Robert is examining the monster.

ROBERT
Okay, the subject is female. Most likely 18-20 years of age. Push effective 6 times the human dose. Core temperature 106 Fahrenheit, pulse 200 bpm, ..respiration elevated, PAO2 300% of normal. The pupils are fully dilated. Now reactive to light. Extreme reaction to UV exposure...
Symptoms and tissue samples confirm subject is infected with KV. Vaccine test series serum 391 compound six. Commencing human trials. Respiration is slowing, pulse 190, Core temperature 105, 104 and decreasing. We may have something here. GA series serum 391 compound 6, ineffective on humans. Test results linked to this entry, saved on 6 redundant drives.
Still no cure.

Robert goes upstairs and records himself on video.

ROBERT
Day 1001: We came in close contact with a Hyve today.The blood tests confirm that I remain immune....for both the airborne and contact strains. Canines remain immune to airborne strain only. You can't go running into the dark dummy. Vaccine trials continue. I am still unable to transfer my immunity to infected host. Krippin virus is.... elegant. It's like fishing in the dark, son. A behavioral note : Um, an infected male exposed himself to sunlight today. EXT. CHECKPOINT (FLASHBACK)
Robert drives his family to safety. There are many people waiting on one side of the fence.

ROBERT'S WIFE
Why are we stopping?

SOLDIER (TO ROBERT)
You've got less than 10 minutes.

They get out of the car. Marley is holding Sam as a young puppy.

ROBERT
Baby, give me the dog.

ROBERT'S WIFE
Let's go baby, let's go.

MARLEY
Daddy.

ROBERT
Stay in my neighborhood and let nobody stop you by.

MARLEY
Mommy, they have guns.

ROBERT'S WIFE
It's okay, they're in the army like daddy.

ROBERT
Coming through.

A soldier is talking to the crowd on a loudspeaker.

SOLDIER
If you are not covered by the checkpoint, then, please, go home.

A soldier is checking citizens for infection.

SOLDIER
You're clear. Go ahead. -- Clear. Clear...okay, next, let's go.

The soldier's instrument shows Robert's wife as infected. She is stopped

SOLDIER
No good.

ROBERT
We are not infected.

A woman on one side of the fence is begging a soldier to take her child.

WOMAN
Please, please take my baby.

SOLDIER (TO ROBERT'S WIFE)
You have to move back. No good.

ROBERT'S WIFE
What, no! Robert, Robert!

ROBERT
Whoa, whoa, get your hands off my wife. I'm lieutenant Robert Neville Get your hands off me.
Scan her again. Stand down! Stand down soldier! Stand down! I am Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Neville. I order you to scan her again. Scan her again!

SOLDIER 2
Alright, scan her again.

SOLDIER
Clear, it's clear, move through.

The soldiers let them pass.

MARLEY
Dad, why can't we go to our home too?

ROBERT'S WIFE
How long?

ROBERT
Five minutes, we'll make it.

They reach a helicopter.

ROBERT
With Merage, code: 621. We are on site.

SOLDIER (TO ROBERT)
I won't take my eyes off them Colonel. You got my word on it.

ROBERT (TO MARLEY)
Give me a kiss. Be careful.

ROBERT'S WIFE
You too.

They begin to pray.

ROBERT'S WIFE
Dear God, please watch over Robert, keep him strong for the struggle ahead of him Lord.
Please, just bring him home safely, Amen.

ROBERT'S WIFE
Daddy's going to make the monsters go away baby, okay?

Marley gives Sam to Robert.

MARLEY
Sam, you protect Daddy.

ROBERT
No baby, I can't take the dog!

SOLDIER
Sir, we have to go.

MARLEY
Dad, look, a butterfly.

The helicopter leaves with Marley and his wife. Then suddenly, it crashes. Robert screams.

INT. ROBERT'S HOUSE
Robert wakes up, and talks to Sam.

How'd you sleep?

TV
Dr. Robert Neville will be taking a closer look at the ongoing mutations of Dr. Alice Krippin's once hailed miracle cure for cancer. So far, almost 5000 patients treated with a retrofitted virus, had begun exhibiting symptoms resembling the early onset of rabies. 25 patients have already died. Dr. Neville has ordered local hospitals to stockpile antiviral drugs, and to begin preliminary quarantine protocol....

ROBERT
It's my birthday today.

TV
We are fully confident Dr. Neville can see us through...

ROBERT
Would you like to sing?

EXT. DOCK
ROBERT
My name is Robert Neville, I am a survivor living in New York City. I am broadcasting on all AM frequencies. I will be at the South Street seaport everyday, midday, when the sun is highest in the sky. If you are out there....if anyone is out there. I can provide food, I can provide shelter, I can provide security. If there's anybody out there, anybody... Please, you are not alone.

ROBERT (TO SAM)
Listen, if you're planning a party or something, just tell me now. Okay, because I don't like surprises, and I swear I'll act surprised. Okay?

As Robert is driving back, he sees that Fred is not in his usual place. He has been moved.

ROBERT
What are you doing out here Fred?
What the hell are you.....no! -- No! No!
What the hell are you doing out here Fred!?! How did you get out here?!?
Fred, if you're real, you better tell me right now!
If you're real, you better tell me right now!
Damn, Fred.

Suddenly, Robert is caught in a trap. Sam begins barking. Robert blacks out.
When he wakes up, Sam is still barking.

ROBERT
I'm okay.I'm okay.

Robert frees himself from the trap. It is almost dark. Some monster dogs attack Robert.
Sam protects him, but gets bitten.

ROBERT
Come on, Sam. Come on.
Come on Sam!
No, no, let's go Sam, we gotta go home Sam. Let's go.

INT. ROBERT'S LABORATORY
Sam is hurt. Robert takes her to his lab and gives her a serum.

ROBERT
Okay, you're alright. It's okay. You're alright. You're alright. Samantha, Samantha. Look at me girl. Hey, you're okay. Samantha, just gotta get you home. Gotta take you home, take you home.
Alright, come here. Come here, come here, got you. It's okay.

Sam is infected, and Robert is forced to kill her. He starts to cry.
