BROCK
Buddy, love the new outfit.
This is exactly what I need to scoop, partner.
Give me some of that web action.

Spiderman breaks Brock's camera.

SPIDERMAN
See you, chum.

He breaks the sewer cover and goes underground.

BROCK
What the hell?

INT.UNDERGROUND RAILWAY

SPIDERMAN
Flint Marko?

MARKO
What do you want from me?

dissolves with the water.

INT. PETER'S APARTMENT
Ditkovich is screaming.

DITKOVICH
Re-ent!

PETER
Not now.

DITKOVICH
This is a free country. It's not a rent-free country.

PETER
Leave me alone.

DITKOVICH
Give me rent.

PETER
You'll get your rent when you fix this damn door!

Peter is angry at Ditkovich.

URSULA
That wasn't cool.

DITKOVICH
He is good boy. He must be in some kind of trouble.

INT. AUNT MAY'S HOUSE
Peter is talking to Aunt May.

PETER
Flint Marko, the man who killed Uncle Ben--
he was killed last night.

AUNT MAY
My--What happened?

PETER
Spider-Man killed him.

AUNT MAY
Spider-Man? I don't understand. Spider-Man doesn't kill people.
What happened?

PETER
I... He was... I thought that you'd feel...He deserved it, didn't he?

AUNT MAY
I don't think it's for us to say whether a person deserves to live or die.

PETER
Aunt May, he killed uncle Ben.

AUNT MAY
Uncle Ben meant the world to us.
But he wouldn't want us living one second with revenge in our hearts.
It's like a poison. It can take you over. Before you know it,
turn us into something ugly.

EXT.BAR
Mary Jane calls Harry.

HARRY
Hello.

MARY JANE
Hey, Harry, it's MJ.

HARRY
Hi.

MARY JANE
I need some company. Are you doing anything? Can I stop by?

HARRY
Yeah, sure. Come on over.

MARY JANE
OK. Are you sure it's OK?

HARRY
I'm not doing anything. Please, come over.

MARY JANE
OK, I'll see you soon.

HARRY
Great.

MARY JANE
Bye.

HARRY
Bernard?

BERNARD
Yes, Mr Osborn?

HARRY
We're having a guest. Can you get some food?

BERNARD
A guest?

HARRY
Yeah, a guest.

BERNARD
A guest guest?

HARRY
Will you just get some food?

BERNARD
Rightaway, sir.

Peter tries calling Mary Jane, and Ditkovitch's door opens.

PETER
Hey, Mr Ditkovitch.

DITKOVITCH
An orange?

PETER
No, thanks. Listen-- I'm really sorry for what happened earlier.
I shouldn't have yelled about that door. It was nothing to be angry about.

DITKOVITCH
Ah, it's not big deal. But if you feel that bad about it, you can buy me pizza some time.
Today's good.

PETER
OK.

DITKOVITCH
Have problem with the phone?

PETER
No, no, I was just-- was trying to figure out what to say.

DITKOVITCH
If it's a woman you're calling, then you say: "You're a good woman,
"I'm good man."

URSULA
Hi, Pete.

PETER
Hi.

DITKOVITCH
He's calling a woman.

URSULA
Are you calling Mary Jane?
I think that would be so good...

URSULA
I think that would be so good...

DITKOVICH
It's none of your business. Go! Go.

URSULA
Give her a call.

PETER
Thanks.

URSULA
Bye.

PETER
Bye.

INT. HARRY'S HOUSE
At night, Mary Jane visits Harry.

HARRY
You hungry?

MARY JANE
Yeah.

HARRY
Come in.

Harry and Mary Jane are cooking

HARRY
Hope you like peppers.

MARY JANE
I love 'em.

Harry and Mary Jane start dancing. The butter starts to burn.

HARRY
Oh, the butter!

Harry tries to flip the omelette in the frying pan and fails.

MARY JANE
Well, we can use that part.

HARRY
"You've been dreaming."

MARY JANE
"Nothing like a little self-deception to get you through the night."

HARRY
All right.

MARY JANE
When did you write that?

HARRY
12th grade.

MARY JANE
It's intense.

HARRY
So, do you want the part?

MARY JANE
I'd love to be in your play.

HARRY
Cheers.

Mary Jane touches Harry's face.

MARY JANE
You know, there's not even a scar.
Barely.

Mary Jane and Harry kiss.

MARY JANE
Sorry.

HARRY
Me too.

MARY JANE
I didn't mean to do that.

HARRY
No, it's OK. Please. Forgive me.

Mary Jane leaves, embarrassed.

HARRY
Mary Jane. Mary Jane. Mary Jane, please!

MARY JANE
I'm sorry.

INT. HARRY'S ROOM
Harry enters his room. The portrait of Harry's father talks to Harry.

HARRY'S FATHER
You've taken your eye off the ball. What have you done?
Avenge me!

Everything comes back to Harry.

HARRY (FLASHBACK)
My father-- he died, right?

PETER (FLASHBACK)
Yeah.

HARRY (FLASHBACK)
Just wish that I could remember more about him.

PETER (FLASHBACK)
Well, he loved you. That's the main thing.

HARRY (FLASHBACK)
I swear on my father's grave: Spider-Man will pay.

Harry begins to hallucinate, imagining his father is talking to him.

HARRY'S FATHER
Harry. Remember me?

HARRY
Yes, father. I remember.

HARRY'S FATHER
I was right about her, about Peter, about everything.
You know what you must do. Make him suffer. Make him wish he were dead.
First we attack his heart.

INT. MARY JANE'S HOUSE
Mary Jane goes home. Her phone rings, and her answering machine starts recording.

ANSWERING MACHINE
Hi, it's me. Sing your song at the beep.

PETER
Hey, MJ. It's Peter. I want to talk to you about last night. I don't know what I
was thinking. I know you were just there to help, and-- I, uh-- I don't know, I
want to see you.

Suddenly, Harry grabs Mary Jane.

HARRY
If you want Peter to live, you're gonna do something for me.

Harry smiles knowingly.

INT. PETER'S APARTMENT
Ursula knocks on Peter's door and Peter answers.

PETER
Yeah?

URSULA
It's Ursula.

PETER
Come in.

Ursula has a little difficulty with opening the door.
Because the door is still broken. Ursula barely opens the door.

URSULA
Hi, Pete.

PETER
Hi.

URSULA
There's a phone call for you.
It's Mary Jane, she called back!

They are very excited. Peter is vary pleased to hear that.

PETER
Really?

URSULA
Yeah! I put the phone on top of the thing.

PETER
Thanks. OK.

Peter calls Mary Jane at once.

PETER
Hey.

MARY JANE
Hi.

PETER
I was so glad you called.

MARY JANE
I've been-- trying to--

Mary Jane falters, but Peter looks happy.

PETER
Can you meet me?

MARY JANE
You bet.

PETER
Now? OK. Where?

MARY JANE
At the bridge, in the park.
On my way.

PETER
Hey. I love you.

Mary Jane hangs up the phone.

EXT. BRIDGE
Mary Jane has already get there.
Peter has a bouquet for Mary Jane and walks to the bridge.

PETER
You look beautiful. Peonies.

Peter hands her a bouquet. But, Mary Jane keeps quiet.

PETER
You OK?

MARY JANE
No. There's something I have to tell you, Pete.

Mary Jane talks seriously.

PETER
OK.

MARY JANE
It's not working. You and me.

PETER
What?

Peter gets confuse trying to make sense of her words.

MARY JANE
I don't want to see you anymore.

Peter and Mary Jane talk on the bridge.

PETER
What are you talking about?

MARY JANE
I don't know. I'm lonely. You aren't there for me.

PETER
I can do this.

MARY JANE
It's over.

PETER
No, please. Please don't say that. I know, I've been selfish.
But I can do better. I can change.

MARY JANE
It's not that simple.

PETER
We love each other! I love you! And we have problems, they work it out.
They talk each other. Look, you see?

Peter shows her the ring. M.J starts to shed tears.

PETER
You know what this is? You know what I want for us?

MARY JANE
There's someone else. I've fallen in love with someone else.

Mary Jane walks away. Harry is watching. He smiles.

INT. CAFE
Peter and Harry are talking about Mary Jane.

PETER
She says that she's lonely. and that I'm not there for her.
There's another guy.

Peter and Harry talk with in the cafe.

HARRY
How are you holding up?

PETER
Not good.
Harry, I was going to propose to her.

HARRY
Really?

HARRY
She's been going through a tough time lately. Career.
I mean, a singing waitress at a jazz club.
That's not exactly what she had in mind for herself.

PETER
A singing waitress? What are you talking about?

HARRY
She was fired from the show. Didn't she tell you?

PETER
She was fired? She was fired and she told you? She didn't tell me?

HARRY
That's why I asked you here, Pete. I'm the other guy.

PETER
What?

HARRY
Look, she came to me one afternoon, troubled.
She needed someone, and I was there for her.
I've always loved her, Pete.
You know that.
It just...started.

Peter is in shock.

PETER
I don't believe this. I don't believe you.

HARRY
I'm really sorry.
I just thought you should know.

Peter gets angry with Peter and leaves there.

WAITRESS
Can I warm you up?

HARRY
Yes, please.

A WAITRESS
How's the pie?

HARRY
So good.

Petre looks back from the street. Harry gloats over Peter's misfortune and disappears abruptly.

INT. HARRY'S HOUSE
Peter stands behind Harry with anger.

HARRY
Would you like a drink? I'm sorry. What was I thinking?
Bad for the public image, right, Mr Key-to-the-city?

Peter talks with Harry about Mary Jane

PETER
What did you do to her?

HARRY
I did what you failed to do. I was there for her.
Mary Jane and I, we understand each other.

PETER
She doesn't know what you are.

HARRY
Peter. She knows me very well. And when she kissed me, it was just like she
used to kiss me. That taste. Strawberries.

Peter and Harry fight.

HARRY
How d'ya like that, Spidey? That all you got? Stinks, doesn't it?
I protected you in high school. Now I'm gonna kick your little ass.
You gonna kill me like you killed my father?

PETER
I'm done trying to convince you.

HARRY
You took him from me. He loved me.

PETER
No. He despised you. You were an embarrassment for him.
Look at that. Little Goblin junior. Gonna cry?

Peter starts to walk away. Harry throws a bomb at him, but Peter throws it back, and it
explodes near Harry's face.

EXT. STREET
A newspaper headline reads: THIEF! Spider-Man shows his true colors"

MAN 1
Spider-Man used to make me feel safe.
Now I'm afraid to walk home from work.

MAN 2
My son thought the world of this guy.

MAN 3
I have a 9 year old daughter, loves Spider-Man.
Who's she supposed to look up to now?

WOMAN
This is the guy they gave the key to the city to?

PETER
I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye.

INT. DAILY BUGLE
Members of the newspaper congratulate Eddie on his employment.

MAN
Cheers! New staff photographer!

BROCK
I just got lucky.

WOMAN
This is so wonderful for you.

BROCK
Well, you might wanna tell JJ to make a little more wall space.

When BROCK sets a picture against wall, he finds PETER.

Good morning.
It's a beautiful day, huh?
What was it you said, I'll never get that picture?
There's your hero.

PETER
I never thought he'd really do that.

BROCK
See? Right there,
you made a judgment call.
You gotta see it as it is.

PETER
It's funny you should say that,
because I was looking through some old photos, and
looks very, uh-- similar.

BROCK
OK-- Well, I gotta get back to work.

PETER
You're trash, Brock.

BROCK
Excuse me?

PETER
Your picture is a fake.

BROCK
Parker, you are such a boy scout.
When are you gonna give a guy a break?

PETER gets angry, and he grabs BROCK in the collar.

PETER
You want forgiveness?
Get religion.

ROBBIE
What's going on here?

BRANT
Are you guys all right?

BROCK
Yeah, no, we're just horsin' around.

Brock looks at Peter.

BROCK
Look, I'm begging you. If you do this,
I will lose everything. There's not a paper in town that will hire me.

PETER
You should've thought of that earlier.

BROCK
What are you doing, Peter?

Peter shows the evidence to Robbie.

PETER
Show this to the editor. Tell him to check his source next time.

JAMESON
It's a fake!

ROBBIE
Empire State Photographic Department confirms it.

JAMESON
Pack your things. Get out of my building.

BROCK
I was just...

JAMESON
You're fired! You know we're gonna have to print a retraction now.
Haven't printed a retraction in 20 years!

NEWSPAPER
"SORRY SPIDEY Bugle drops charges"

INT. PETER'S APARTMENT
Peter answers the phone.

PETER
Shalom?

CONNORS
Mr. Parker? Dr Connors here.

PETER
Oh, Dr Connors! How are you?

CONNORS
Quite a specimen you left me, Parker. Its chemistry is not unlike the meteorites of the 70s.

Ursula brings Peter some refreshments.

PETER
Thanks. It's good.

CONNORS
You know what, Parker? Parker?

Peter gives Ursula an order.

PETER
Give me some milk.

CONNORS
It amplifies characteristics of its host.

PETER (TO URSULA)
Hey, give me another cookie.

CONNORS
Especially aggression. This can be dangerous. Peter, you didn't keep any, did you?

PETER (TO URSULA)
You got any with nuts?

URSULA
Um-- I have some nuts, I could make some.

PETER
Go make me some.

CONNORS
Peter?

PETER
No, no. Of course not.

Peter walks around the street excited because of the black spider suit.

INT. DAILY BUGLE
Miss Brant is talking to Peter about his pictures.

BRANT
Your shots are so good.

PETER
I'd love to shoot you sometime.

Peter kisses her.

BRANT
Peter Parker! Peter...

Jameson and Robbie come from Jameson's office.

JAMESON
Parker! Miss Brant, that's not the position I hired you for!

Peter shows them some pictures.

ROBBIE
Black suit Spider-Man! Peter, these are incredible!
We gotta have these, Jonah.

JAMESON
I'll pay you the usual rate.

PETER
If you want the shots, I'll take the staff job. Double the money.

Peter does a rude and strange action. For example, he sits down on Jameson's chair
and walks and dances around the street and wears a suit although he doesn't wear
one usually.

EXT. SEWER
Bubbles come up from inside of water and Marko returns from mud to sand.

PETER
You are really gonna dig this joint.

GWEN
Do you think I'm dressed all right?
Too fancy or...

PETER
You're looking fine, babe.

GWEN
Thank you.

PETER
Love that little giggle.

INT. JAZZ CLUB

GWEN
Oh, this is so cool!
I have never been to a jazz club before.
I hope we can get a table.

PETER
Find us some shade.

Peter passes some money to a waitress.

PETER
Thanks.

WAITRESS
Right this way, sir.

DESK
"RESERVED"

GWEN
Thank you.

PETER
I'm so loving this.

GWEN
Oh, me too.

Gwen sees Mary Jane at the club.

GWEN
Isn't that your old girlfriend?

PETER
Yeah.

GWEN
Do you want to go someplace else?

PETER
No, no. I'll be OK.

Paul, a bartender, encourages Mary Jane.

PAUL
Mary Jane, show us what you got.

PETER
I'll be right back.

GWEN
Right.

Peter sits down next to MJ and begins to play the piano.

MARY JANE
Peter?

Peter begins to dance.

PETER
This is for you. Double time! Thanks. Now dig all this.

Peter dances very well with Gwen Stacey. They stop in front of
Mary Jane.

GWEN
That was all for her?

Gwen apologizes to Mary Jane and leaves.

GWEN
I'm so sorry.

PAUL
You all right, Mary Jane?

MARY JANE
I'm fine.

PAUL
OK.

Peter goes up to Mary Jane, smiling.

PETER
Hey.

MARY JANE
What's wrong with you?

PETER
You.

PAUL
Can I help you, sir?

PETER
No.

BOUNCER
Is everything OK here, Paul?

PETER
Yeah, is everything OK here, Paul?

PAUL
Take him out of here.

The bouncer grabs Peter's arm.

BOUNCER
Let's go, sir.

PETER
Take your hand offa me. Now.

Peter throws the bouncer.

MARY JANE
Peter, stop!

Peter hits Mary Jane, and she falls to the floor. His anger turns
to sorrow. Mary Jane looks at him in pain.

MARY JANE
Who are you?

Peter is ashamed.

PETER
I don't know.

Peter leaves.

Questions
1. What happens to Harry after Mary Jane leaves his apartment?
2. Why does Mary Jane break up with Peter?
3.  How does Peter change after the breakup?
